Just last month, it was announced that Marmite will be discontinued in Singapore due to supply issues. Many ardent fans of the beloved yeast extract were disappointed… and guess what? Even Bovril, the savoury meat extract paste that I used to have with porridge is seemingly affected, though news reports say it won’t.
Can you believe that a bottle of Marmite now costs $39.99 to S$57, and Bovril is going for S$15 a bottle on Shoppee? That’s daylight robbery!
For those who enjoy a plate of Marmite chicken at their favourite zi char spot, are you worried that it might be a thing of the past soon? Well, it’s uncertain, but for now, here’s a list of 5 zi char spots to savour marmite chicken while it lasts.
1. Chuan Kee Seafood
I visited Chuan Kee Seafood at 1091A Lower Delta Road while I was doing a feature for the best-rated zi char in Singapore. This zi char spot offers Mami Crispy Chicken at S$13.08, so order a plate to go with their other array of scrumptious dishes.

2. Keng Eng Kee Seafood
A zi char business since the 1970s, Keng Eng Kee Seafood moved from Old Havelock Road Hawker Centre to its current location at Alexandra Village. It’s one of my favourite spots to enjoy moonlight hor fun and YES, they offer Marmite Chicken that comes in 3 sizes: S$15.90 (small), S$23.90 (medium), and S$27.80 (large).

3. Yang Ming Seafood
With outlets at VivoCity, Bishan, and Ubi Crescent, 7-year-old Yang Ming Seafood serves piquant Marmite Chicken along with their fresh array of seafood. According to them, they have an adequate supply of Marmite and do not foresee this dish being taken off the menu anytime soon.

4. Dian Xiao Er
With 19 outlets across Singapore, chances are there’s a Dian Xiao Er near you — and if there isn’t, you’re probably not too far from one. Relish on a plate of boneless Marmite Chicken Thigh (S$17 for small, S$25.30 for medium, S$34 for large), saving you the trouble of discarding the bones after you’re done.

5. New Station Snack Bar
Nestled within Far East Plaza, New Station Snack Bar is a popular 32-year-old family-run eatery selling an assortment of zi char-style dishes. You can either share a plate of Marmite Chicken (S$16/S$23) along with your other dishes, or simply enjoy the Marmite Chicken Rice (S$7.50) on its own.
