Michael’s Bar & Grill: Get S$1 Shots All-Night Every Friday At This Bar In South Buona Vista Road

Michael's Bar & Grill-1

I enjoy drinking as much as every other 22 year old, which is to say, a lot. But drinking out is always expensive and I’ve somewhat resigned myself to burning a hole through a wallet whenever I’m out with my friends. So, when I heard of a place that sells $1 shots all-night on Friday nights, I knew I had to check it out for myself.

Enter, Michael’s Bar & Grill at South Buona Vista Road — I know, it’s super out of the way, but think of it this way: the money you save on these $1 shots, you can use it for your taxi fare to your next destination.

Starting off with a round of shots, we tried the tray of shots: Strawberry Puree, Mango Puree and Blue Lagoon ($1 per shot). The Strawberry Puree and Mango Puree shots are both made with tequila and lime syrup, and the Mango Puree was my favourite shot out of the lot.

The Blue Lagoon was made with vodka, curacao and lime syrup, and though it was strong, the natural tasting mango was easier to down.

These shots also look great lined up in alternating colours while your friends try to take a Boomerang video of you attempting to finish all the shots within three seconds! Whether or not you actually manage to do it, that’s another thing altogether.

Don’t forget to fill your stomach with food first, or you’ll end up cutting your partying short by having to head home while your friends are all moving on to the club. The Buffalo Wings ($12 for 6 pieces) were crispy and juicy, and I opted to have the sauce on the side because I’m a wuss when it comes to spicy foods.

The sauce didn’t disappoint; it had a good kick of heat along with a hint of sourness. If you’re like me, and don’t enjoy feeling your tongue on fire, the sour cream sauce also helped to take off the edge of the heat.

Carbs are always a good idea when drinking, so try creating your own pasta from the base and add-ons offered. I chose a cream base ($15) and mushrooms ($3), along with prawns ($5). The pasta was al dente, with a nice bite to it and the cream was thick and the perfect amount was given to coat the pasta.

For the people out there who are too lazy to peel prawns, you’ll be happy to know that the prawns were already shelled, and they were fresh and big.

If you like something out of the norm, David the bartender, decided to create a few variations of the original shots specially for us (psst, you could probably ask him to remake it when you’re there).

The Galaxy, Lime and Orange shots ($1 per shot) were all different colours, so it would look almost like a rainbow once lined up!

My favourites out of the new shots were the purple Galaxy shot, made with vodka, tequila, curacao and grenadine syrup, as well as the Orange shot, similar to the Mango Puree shot — the Galaxy shot was definitely stronger than the others, but the grenadine gave it a nice sweetness that helped to reduce the harsh taste of the alcohol.

The skeptic in me originally thought “$1 shots are too cheap, it’s probably watered down and weak”, but after trying the shots, I’m more than glad to admit I was wrong.

Expected damage: $20 – $40 per pax
