It has been quite a week for Jessie Tan, owner of Nan Hua Chang (Ah Chew) Fish Head Steamboat. First, she will move her stall with its 97 years of heritage from the old Techlink location to 6 Kaki Bukit Avenue 1 on 7 Sep.

On top of the relocation, the establishment will be rebranded from Traditional Nan Hua Chang Fish Head Steamboat (above, left), to Nan Hua Chang (Ah Chew) Fish Head Steamboat (above, right).

This is where it gets interesting. According to Jessie, she has had a series of disputes with her former business partners and they may be misusing her brand’s name by operating as Nan Hua Chang (Heritage). We tried contacting her former business partners but were unsuccessful.

Jessie’s great-granduncle founded the establishment in 1927, starting out selling fish soup along Merchant Road. The newly rebranded ‘Ah Chew’ comes from her father’s name, Tan Ah Chew.

The establishment has revamped its menu with new dishes: Baby Squid (S$15, S$20, S$25), Chef Signature Sauce Prawn (S$20, S$30, S$40) & Teochew Orh Nee (S$15, S$23, S$30). For those looking to experience the traditional fish head steamboat, their signature Red Grouper Steamboat comes at 3 price points: S$39, S$49 & S$72.

Additionally, you can opt to enjoy a whole Red Grouper (S$120), which Jessie says is new on the menu. Other featured menu items that can be enjoyed are the Butter Cray Fish (S$30, S$45, S$60), Cereal Prawn (S$20, S$30, S$40) as well as the Pig Intestines (S$12, S$18, S$24).
