New in town: Onkei Tonkatsu, Paya Lebar — Crunch time just turned into cheesy tonkatsu

We’re back with another new Japanese eatery, this time at Paya Lebar Square—Onkei Tonkatsu is the only crunch time we want. Dedicated to bringing the blessing of authentic Japanese cuisine to people, Onkei Tonkatsu serves a mouth-watering range of tonkatsu and rice dishes.

The tonkatsu selection here includes not just the usual pork, but also chicken and assorted seafood.

Some highlights include the Onkei Signature Katsu Set (from S$17.90++). You can select your protein to go with this set, choosing from Chicken (S$17.90++), Pork Loin (S$19.90++), and Pork Fillet (S$21.90++).

Each set comes with a bowl of rice (your choice of white or brown), tonjiru soup, pickles and green tea. I’d imagine the Japanese pickles like takuan and fukujinzuke would be a welcome refreshment after the heavy fried meat cutlets.

You know Onkei Tonkatsu means business when you hear that their tonjiru soup is patiently simmered for over 12 hours. It’s also refillable, so you get as much as you’d like.

While you’re at Onkei Tonkatsu, don’t miss out on the Cheese Tonkatsu Set (from S$21.90++). The mix of creamy cheese and crispy breading over pork loin will have you skipping the gym.

For something a little more familiar, the Curry Katsu Set (from S$22.90++) is a must-try at Onkei Tonkatsu. The combination of Japanese curry with your choice of crispy pork loin or pork fillet promises to be a irresistible one.

If you’re a fan of seafood, try the Assorted Fried Seafood Set (S$22.90++) for a mix of oysters, aji fish and ebi.

With their all-rounded range of sides, each set promises to be fulfilling, balanced, and delightful.

Complete the indulgence with an additional topping to your set, such as the Takoyaki (S$3++ for 5 pieces) or Tori Karaage (S$4.50++ for 3 pieces). After all, the light bites on the side always add that extra bit of fun to the meal.
