Has the brown sugar milk tea hype finally died down? Well, it sure seems to be the case at Playmade by 丸作 since they’re rolling out an entire series of new drinks!

Playmade’s Purple Sweet Potato Series consists of two drinks: Purple Sweet Potato Milk Tea and Purple Sweet Potato Latte. You can get the both of them as they’re now available at all Playmade outlets islandwide!

I’m sure some of you might be wondering, didn’t they introduce these a while back? Indeed they did, but this time, they’ve refined their recipes. You’ll now get to taste actual sweet potato bits in the drinks!

The Purple Sweet Potato Milk Tea (S$3.40/S$4.70) had a smooth blend of milk and purple sweet potato. I appreciated how there was a subtle taste of purple sweet potatoes in every sip. However, the decadence of the milk was a tad bit overpowering.

Luckily, not all was lost. There was an abundance of purple sweet potato bits in the drink. They added a slightly bitter aftertaste which contrasted the overall sweetness of the drink very well.

On the other hand, the Purple Sweet Potato Latte (S$4.30/S$5.80) had a milder flavour profile. The taste of purple sweet potato wasn’t as prominent as in the milk tea. Hence, I didn’t enjoy it as much.

Not only that, but there also weren’t as many purple sweet potato bits in this drink. As such, I felt there was an inconsistency in the preparation of the drinks. It might also explain why there wasn’t a strong taste of purple sweet potatoes.

Nevertheless, I have to say that the Purple Sweet Potato Pearls (S$0.80/S$1.20) were very unique and tasty. I could taste the earthiness of purple sweet potatoes in them.

Furthermore, they also had the signature chewiness that Playmade’s handmade pearls are popular for. As such, I felt they were the most enjoyable portion of the drinks.

For now, as far as purple-coloured drinks are concerned, LiHo’s Taro Soy Latte still has my vote. But if you love sweet potato-flavoured food items, definitely give these two drinks from Playmade a try. Make sure you also opt for the Purple Sweet Potato Pearls!
