How do y’all feel about vending machines? I know they were a big part of my schooling life, especially when those hot toasted sandwich machines became a thing. We could count on them to give us food, snacks and drinks in a pinch. (Except that one big machine in the main hall area. You always betrayed us. I won’t forget it.

So, I was understandably intrigued upon hearing about What The Cup!, where according to their website, a single machine is capable of making about 300 different drinks. Yes, 300!

What the Cup - machine

What The Cup! machines are located islandwide, and they are quite easy to spot – they are large, blue rectangles with bold white typography and exclamation marks all over. We went to the one located at Thomson Plaza, which is on level 3 near Fairprice.

When you first encounter the machine, you’re greeted by a touch panel inviting you to select one of the many categories of drinks available. Tapping the category will bring you into the full menu where you can choose what you want.

After you’ve chosen your drink, you’re taken to another panel to customise it – if you want it hot, iced or blended, adjust the sweetness levels, and indicate if you need a straw or lid.

Prices will vary depending on your choice of beverage, but they start from S$2 for simpler concoctions or hot coffee.

What I tried at What The Cup!

what the cup - all 2

We got a total of 5 different drinks across all categories, just to see what was available. There truly were a lot of choices, and we spent more time than we’d care to admit just deciding what to have. (Dice-rolling may or may not have been involved in the selection process.)

what the cup - sodacano

One of our wildcard drinks, the Sodacano (S$2.50 for iced ) is a shot of espresso, mixed with soda water. I am probably not the target demographic of this mixture, but I can say one thing for certain: it woke me up way faster than my usual morning kopi did. Oof.

what the cup - pepsi yuzu

Next, we have Pepsi Yuzu (S$2 for iced ). Yuzu syrup is mixed into Pepsi, resulting in a sweet and citrusy beverage with a hint of tang. It was very refreshing in the muggy weather of that afternoon.

what the cup - oreo drinks

We also got a couple of Oreo smoothies –Green Tea Caramel Oreo (S$6.50 for blended) and one of What The Cup!’s most popular drinks, the Oreo Smoothie Volcano (S$6 for blended). The amount of Oreo crumbs here is serious business, and will definitely please Oreo lovers.

The Green Tea Caramel Oreo was our favourite of the lot. It was slightly milky, sweet from caramel, combined with the crunch and flavour of Oreo but tempered by the vegetal notes of matcha. The combination made this drink interesting and quite addictive.

It was also easy to see why the Oreo Smoothie Volcano is a crowd favourite. Oreo and milk were basically made for each other; blend them both up into an icy smoothie and you’ve got a delicious milky treat that won’t fail you.

Final thoughts

what the cup - all 1

What The Cup! is basically like having a cafe available to you any time of the day – the drinks are affordable and it’s incredibly convenient. You can go down whenever you want, take as long as you want to decide, and nobody will judge you for your beverage choices.
