In the wild, wild west, we discovered Pobo Gelato hidden in the nooks of West Coast Community Centre. They’ve been creating artisanal gelato in a humble neighbourhood not too far off from West Coast Park.

Gelato is a popular dessert with Italian origins, but owner Damian adds in Singapore’s very own local twists to the creamy mix. This July 2019, we got our hands on three new flavours hot out of the churn.

Chicken Floss, Ruby Chocolate, and Gianduja are not unfamiliar names of foods we’ve encountered, but having them as gelato flavours definitely takes the taste challenge up a notch!

We opted to have Chicken Floss on a cone (S$4/single scoop), and I loved that it wasn’t just scooped into the cone like usual ice cream balls. Instead, the entire cone is filled using a spatula. Damian loved chicken floss as a child, hence the creation of Chicken Floss as a gelato!

Chicken Floss incorporates actual scoops of chicken floss that you’d find in your bread, embedded in a smooth, creamy, vanilla gelato base. Taking my first bites, I immediately thought of a breakfast favourite from my childhood.

Anyone else here remembers BreadTalk’s pork floss bun? This is a major throwback, and you’d realise this combination works.

Ruby Chocolate uses a variety of chocolate produced by Belgian-Swiss cocoa company, Barry Callebaut. This pink chocolate is said to carry light berry notes, being both sweet and sour.

Meanwhile, Gianduja is a sweet blend of hazelnut and dark chocolate, with chopped-up hazelnuts embedded within the gelato. It’s a great flavour for chocolate lovers who love a little extra to munch on.

Granted, these two definitely sit well on the waffle together! I can’t wait to see what Pobo Gelato creates next.


These gelato flavours really do take us back to the good ol’ days. I think Chicken Floss just became my new favourite flavour!
