If you’re a lover of roasted meats, you’ve probably heard of Roast Paradise located at Old Airport Road Food Centre, which has regular snaking queues stretching outside their stall. Well, it looks like there’s good news for the northeasters in Singapore— they’ve recently opened their second stall at Sengkang on 9 September 2022.
Roast Paradise was opened back in 2016 by a couple of young hawkers, Kai and Randall. I had the chance to meet the friendly Kai today at his new outlet.
I casually asked him: “What made you decide to open in Sengkang?”
He shared, “We have many group-buy customers ordering from Sengkang, that’s why we decided to open here for their convenience.” What a thoughtful guy!
The menu over at their new outlet is the same as that of their original stall. You can choose between Char Siew Rice/Noodle (S$4.50 for small, S$5.50 for large) and Roast Pork Rice/Noodle (S$4.50 for small, S$5.50 for large).
If you can’t decide on what type of roast meat to have, you can order the Char Siew Roast Pork Rice (S$5.80) or Char Siew Roast Pork Noodle (S$5.80)— you can savour the best of both worlds!
We ordered their 200g Roast Pork (S$12), 200g Char Siew (S$12) and a plate of Rice (S$1) to share. It was my second time dining at Roast Paradise and I couldn’t wait to start.
The char siew was buttery and melted in my mouth. The skin had the perfect amount of char and the meat was very tender. It was flavourful enough and I didn’t need to dip it in the accompanying sauce. The rice was delicately flavoured with garlic, which reminded me of a less-oily version of chicken rice.
The roasted pork came with a side of honey mustard which is rarely served at other hawker stalls. The meat’s crackling skin was so well-executed and dipping it into the sweet tangy mustard was the best combo on earth— the meats here are to die-for!
We also decided to try the Hakka Noodle (S$3). It was a simple bowl of mee kia with a topping of minced pork, Japanese cucumbers and a dollop of sambal chilli.
After mixing everything up, the noodles had turned to an inviting reddish hue. The mee kia slid down my throat as smooth as capellini pasta and the fragrant sambal perfumed the noodles with a smoky aroma— I was fooled by its humble outlook.
So the next time you’re at Sengkang, keep a lookout for the Happy Hawkers coffeeshop that’s located right outside Ranggung LRT station.
I’m glad that the residents here don’t have to travel all the way to Old Airport Road Food Centre just for a taste of Roast Paradise. And I can’t wait to return for more!
