It’s no surprise that food prices in Singapore have been increasing rapidly for the past year due to the supply chain disruptions caused by the war between Russia and Ukraine, and rising inflation. And unfortunately, the rising food costs have led to Yishun Park Hawker Centre‘s favourite Western food stall, Shaker Lakers to make the heavy decision to close down.
Shaker Lakers mentioned in their recent Facebook post that the stall’s last day will be on 25 February 2023 and thanked their customers for their support for the past 3 years.
For those of you who haven’t visited the gem that is Shaker Lakers, the stall is manned by two chefs: Michael Quinn and Gillian Pua.
Michael is an Irish chef who comes with significant pedigree, having previously worked in New York City for 14 years. The duo met while working at Marche Singapore, and settled on opening a hawker stall together.
Known for serving quality dishes with huge portions at affordable prices, we are truly heartbroken to see them go. Gillian shared in a recent interview that the decision for the closure is due to the marked rise in food costs.
She added that prices for ingredients at the stall have increased, with some rising by 50% while others rose by a whopping 200%. And if you’re secretly hoping that Shaker Lakers may reopen in the future, well, the duo have decided to spend more time with their respective families after the closure.
News of them closing shop has definitely caused sadness to their customers, as expressed on Facebook. We know we’re especially going to miss their crispy Battered Cod and juicy Patty Melt Sandwich.
