Food poisoning is no joke. In some mild cases, victims can recover without professional medical intervention. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the reality for these 2 Malaysian siblings. For 5 days and 4 nights, Xiaohongshu user 卿卿子衿 and her sister were admitted to Sunway Medical Centre’s ICU from consuming stinky tofu.

The incident began on a casual Thursday night. On 10 Aug 2023, they visited the OUG Pasar Malam in Kuala Lumpur with 2 other family members. The group decided to share 2 boxes of stinky tofu after hearing other customers praise the stall for being the best of the best. After feasting on the tasty dish, user 卿卿子衿 stated that she felt fine until the next day.
The following morning, she went out to grab breakfast with her friends. It wasn’t until she returned home when she started to feel uneasy. Her stomach was in pain but she looked past it, believing that it was just period cramps.

However, the pain intensified, and she started experiencing diarrhoea that became more and more frequent. Soon after, she started vomiting and grew a fever. According to the post, she pooped a total of 14 times, and vomitted 3 times that day.
Her conditioned worsened to the point of feeling faint, but she held herself together until her sister came home from work at around 9.30pm, which was when they went to the emergency ward. At 2am, her blood pressure reading increased drastically. This led to her admission to the HDU in the hospital’s ICU.

Through a blood test, the doctor found vibrio, a bacteria that’s transmitted through polluted water.
The next day, her sister was hospitalised for food poisoning as well. That’s when she realised that the stinky tofu could have been the cause. It was later discovered that her sister had both the vibrio and rota bacteria.
Even after being discharged, she wasn’t entirely sure if the stinky tofu was 100% at fault. It was only after she learned that one of her university seniors had experienced the same thing after eating stinky tofu from a different pasar malam that her suspicions were confirmed.
It total, her hospitalisation costs reached RM13,000.
Remember, everything you eat has its risks, so proceed with caution!
