Serving up one-of-a-kind fusion thosai tacos is newly-opened The Maha Co, a new Indian-Mexican cafe nestled in Nexus @ one-north. Yes, you heard it right. Thosai folded into half, like a taco, and filled with peanut butter and nutella, guacamole and salsa, and more.
The Maha Co was opened by local rapper Yung Raja — whose real name is Rajid Ahamed — as he wanted to put a spin on his mother’s traditional thosai, which was a breakfast staple for him growing up.
Together with his long-time friend, Ong Weiquan, who is the owner of superfood concept store Gorilla Press, the two went through months of research & development at home, pairing traditional thosai with different sweet and savoury fillings, before finally selling thosai tacos in January 2022.
The eclectic and colourful cafe’s decorations are courtesy of Raja himself, who personally plastered Bollywood and Mexican posters on the walls.
Featuring thosai (also spelled as dosa) batter that has been hand-made from scratch daily, The Maha Co’s fusion thosai tacos use a traditional decades-old recipe, thanks to Raja’s mum.
Its menu offers six thosai tacos, the most interesting of which definitely has to be its PB Nutella (S$6.50). You can also top up an additional S$1.50 to enjoy it with ice cream.
Craving something savoury? Go for its Crispy Chicken + Cucumber Yoghurt (S$11.90) or Roast Pork + Mexican Slaw (S$13.90). Alternatively, thosai purists can rely on the trusty and traditional Plain + Vegetable Curry (S$6.90).
Do note that all of its thosai tacos come in a serving of two pieces.
The Indian-Mexican cafe also sells your usual cafe fare, but with a fusion twist. Take its Coconut Gelato + Mango Croissant (S$8.50) dessert for example.
The cafe also sells a range of Craft Beer (S$9.90) and other alcoholic drinks, with an evergreen buy-five-get-one-free promotion, as Raja had intended for the cafe to be a watering hole for nearby white-collar workers looking to have a beer or two after a hard day at wokr.
According to Raja’s Instagram posts, he’s even planning to pair thosai with caviar one day.
