When I was younger, I was the fussiest kid when it came to food, so fishballs, fishcakes and otah were constants in most of my diet. Tiong Bahru Fried Fish Ball provides these simple yet satisfying fried snacks, and they’ve now opened their newest outlet at Kovan 209 Market and Food Centre.
The stall has been running for over 20 years and has expanded to different locations such as Tampines, West Coast, Bendemeer, and now, Kovan. Known for its fried fish balls and large variety of fried nibbles, Tiong Bahru Fried Fish Ball offers nostalgic old-school snacks are not easily available at every nook and cranny.
From waffles to deep fried fish skin to popularised flavours like salted-egg and taro, the list of new food trends is endless, but let’s be honest, you can never beat the taste of nostalgia from the past. It’s just the pure simplicity of a bite of their fishballs, and it’s as if you’re at one of the roadside food stands that were available back in the 70s.
What’s even more prevalent now is the rare sight of singular stalls that specialise in fishballs. It was already pretty scarce in the past, but all the more so now.
Tiong Bahru Fried Fish Ball offers multiple options, from different types of fishcakes like Fish Meat Ball (S$1.50 for 4 pieces), White Fish Cake (S$1.50), to their iconic Fried Fish Ball (S$1.50 for 6 pieces).
What I like most would probably be their Chilli Fish Ball or Chilli Fish Cake though, because their handmade fish paste contains a slight kick of spice that makes it all the more flavourful. Both cost S$1.50 for 3 pieces, so it’s super shiok and totally value for money.
Once you’re at the front of the stall, not only will you see the stretch of snacks, you might be lucky enough to catch the owner frying a new batch of fish balls. Because of its high turnover, his fishballs usually turn out super hot and springy.
I told you guys, fishballs are what I grew up with. Fishball noodles, fishball soup, you name it, I love it— especially the one at Ng Kee Teochew Fishball Kway Teow Mee. Well, from the looks of it, the public seems as excited as me that Tiong Bahru Fried Fish Ball has arrived in the Kovan estate!
