As someone who frequents this hawker centre relatively often, I proclaim that Old Airport Road Food Centre is home to many hidden gems with great grub. From 15 Jun 2023, we have a fantastic new contender: Yan Ji Seafood Soup‘s latest outlet!
For the folks who searched for the stall and saw the “Permanent closed” notice, no need to panic! There was indeed another Yan Ji Seafood Soup, which later rebranded into O.A.R Seafood Soup in Old Airport Road Food Centre. Unfortunately, both branches of that stall have closed for good.
Having been around since 1983, Yan Ji Seafood Soup has a prestigious reputation among seafood fans. They have since opened 2 outlets (formerly a third one, but that outlet has closed), and this will be their third outlet currently running.
Their seafood broth is chock-full of flavour from a boatload of shrimp, fish bones and crayfish that are slowly boiled to extract all that yummy seafood goodness. Flavourful and light with savoury seafood notes, what’s there not to love?
Lucky for us, Yan Ji Seafood Soup is known for providing more seafood than soup, which definitely gives much needed substance to the dish. There are 5 different combinations of ingredients to choose from, with choices ranging from the basic Seafood Soup (S$7.50/S$9.50) to the more filling Crayfish Seafood Soup (S$13.50/S$15.50/S$17.50).
The Premium Seafood Soup (S$32/42) may cause a couple of jaws to drop, thanks to the price. However, it contains every ingredient — crayfish, abalone, scallops, fish maw, sea prawns and red grouper. This particular choice would make for a rather atas family dinner dish, wouldn’t you agree?
Looks like there is more to look forward to during my next visit to Old Airport Road Food Centre! As this is the only branch in the East, some will be glad that they won’t have to travel to Woodlands or Jalan Besar to get a taste of the hype.
