After serving up Teochew-style bak kut teh for more than five decades, Yong Bak Kut Teh has decided to cease operations from end of Nov 2022 onwards.
A stall located in a coffee shop just beside the main road, near the junction of River Valley Road and Mohamed Sultan Road, Yong Bak Kut Teh has been operating for much longer than I was born. The family business selling the Teochew version of bak kut teh has been long-standing till operation prices hit the roof. With higher commodity prices and cost of supplies rising, they have officially announced their departure and confirmed that it would be their last month of operation.
Since 1964 (a total of 58 years in business), this bak kut teh place has remained quite undetected. However, this stretch along River Valley and Mohamed Sultan Road used to be hot stretch for drinks previously, so those who used to frequent this stretch would definitely be familiar with this bak kut teh stall.
Also popularly known as “that bak kut teh along Mohamed Sultan Road”, Yong Bak Kut Teh’s bak kut teh takes on a dark brown colour, which upon first impression suggests a herbal taste. However, unlike how it looks, its taste caters more to the Singaporean taste buds instead, serving up a more peppery version.
Their Pork Ribs Soup is their best-seller, offering two pieces of pork ribs in their sweet broth with a hint of pepper spice. Together with a bowl of You Tiao and rice, the set goes for S$13.
In the mid-90s, Mohamed Sultan Road was known as the haven for those who liked to party. For those that used to party at dbl O, a nightclub that was established in 2000 that has officially been closed, one can surely reminisce. Once a prime location for late-night suppers and laughter shared with friends due to its spot of convenience and long operating hours, Yong Bak Kut Teh will now belong in history with the ceasing of operations by the end of Nov 2022.
Those that used to frequent this stretch can now call up your clubbing friends to return back to the good ol’ days and patronise the store for one last time.
