In a world of cuisine where everything seems to have been done before, 165 Pork Rib Prawn Noodles managed to surprise us with its mala kolo mee in June. Apparently, we aren’t the only ones who love the fusion concept (and flavours!) because they have opened a second branch in Yishun with an all-new mala prawn bowl!

The outlet is still brand spanking new, having been operating for only about 6 weeks now (the grand opening was on 8 September 2022). Fans can stretch their mala experience with the 3 newest items on the menu, all based on adding a dose of mala to the familiar prawn soup taste. They are only available at this Yishun branch.

The basic version is Mala Prawn Mee Soup (S$5.50).

Alan Woo, 35, the ex-Navy regular who created the brand explained his new dish to us. “It’s basically prawn soup mixed with the traditional mala sauce. In Chinese, it is called 麻辣虾汤 (spicy shrimp soup).”

While not entirely new or unique, it definitely is a good way to introduce yourself to the standout flavours at 165 Pork Rib Prawn Noodles.

As expected, the mala adds a spicy note or two to the prawn soup. Alan explains that he made it specially for those who like their soup with a bit more heat. His prawn soup tends to fall on the sweeter side but together with the infusion of mala, the mixture achieves a more rounded, balanced flavour.

There are an infinite number of combinations but two other items on the menu are currently very popular.

First is the Mala Pork Rib Mee Soup (S$6). Using the same concept of a mala base for the soup, this bowl adds 4 medium-sized pork rib pieces to create a more hearty, substantial meal. The garnishing of taugeh and shallots is the same as the Mala Prawn Mee Soup.

The Big Kahuna is their Mala Pork Rib Prawn Mee Soup (S$7). You get 2 large prawns and 2 medium-sized pork rib pieces. Not for the faint of heart or the small of stomach, it will leave you with a full belly and a semi-scorched tongue.

I think that the food at 165 Pork Rib Prawn Noodles has improved quite a bit over the last 3 months. Alan has taken all the lessons from his first stall and applied them here. If you are up for the mala challenge and unusual pairings, make your way to 165 Pork Rib Prawn Noodles, Yishun.
