168 Curry Chicken: Comforting, home-style curry chicken in Old Airport Road Food Centre served with crispy prata, bread, rice or noodles

Curry chicken is one of those dishes that varies so greatly in quality across different hawker stalls— some are too salty while others are too watery, while certain ones lack enough depth of flavour.

Though what makes a bowl of curry chicken great is subjective, I personally feel that good curry chicken is aromatic with a liberal use of coconut milk and generous chunks of tender chicken within. After hearing good things about 168 Curry Chicken, I decided to drop by to try it for myself.

168 Curry Chicken is a stall within Old Airport Road Food Centre specialising in curry chicken, as the name suggests. Their titular dish is known for having a home-cooked taste, and each bowl is served with the diner’s choice of either noodles, rice, bread or prata. You can even opt for a huge bowl of curry chicken to share for S$26!

What I tried at 168 Curry Chicken

Of all the carb options available, the prata one stood out to me the most— while it is common to be served a bowl of curry on the side when ordering from prata stores, this was the first time that I’d seen a curry stall offer prata on the side.

This Curry Chicken w/ Prata combo cost S$7, and included a bowl of curry with a single piece of prata.

I was intrigued by how the prata had such a perfect circular shape, given how most other pratas tend to have irregularities in structure. As I tore apart the prata, it let out a satisfying crackle, acting as a testament to its immense crispiness.

This truly was one of the best plain pratas I’ve had in my life, no joke. It was incredibly crisp and fluffy, with an addictive buttery aroma that permeated throughout. Each thin layer was airy and not doughy at all, and dipping it into the curry made it all the more satisfying. My only gripe was that we finished devouring it way too quickly.

If the stall started selling their prata à la carte, trust me when I say that I’d probably buy 10 at one go!

The main star of the show, the curry chicken, did not disappoint either. It was thick with just the right amount of viscosity, and donned a vibrant orange hue. It had an aromatic fragrance and a tiny kick to it. I especially liked how homely and comforting it tasted, almost like something you’d enjoy from a home-cooked meal.

There were about 3 small chicken pieces within, which were pretty tender, albeit not all that meaty. I also found large potato chunks in the curry, which were similarly soft. They paired nicely with the savoury curry, and all in all, this bowl of chicken curry was definitely outstanding.

However, I found that the Curry Chicken w/ Prata combo was not very filling and a little steep in price— this is likely largely due to the fact that only a single piece of prata is served. While extremely delicious, the prata did not do much in satiating me. I would love for there to be an additional piece of prata served too, just to make it more filling.

Final thoughts

168 Curry Chicken is a good place to visit while in Old Airport Road Food Centre when you’re in need of some comforting, home-style curry chicken. The prices are honestly higher than most other stalls, though the quality definitely shines.

While I recommend trying their mind-blowing prata, if you’re in need of a more satiating meal, I’d suggest getting the curry with rice or noodles instead. I would love to return to the stall in the future for another round of their curry, and this time, I think I’ll ask the stall owners if I could purchase multiple pieces of their amazing prata too!
