“Air flown chicken rice from Jetstar Asia”
I bet most Singaporeans are familiar with Jetstar Airways for their budget flights, especially to nearby Southeast Asian countries for a quick getaway. I’ve personally taken their flights multiple times to Jakarta, Bangkok and other typical tourist spots.
But throughout my budget plane escapades, I’ve never tried the inflight meals ever. Until now. Meals aren’t part of the no frills experience as they cost extra, so naturally if you want to eat, you’ll have to pay that little extra.
In this article, I’ll be reviewing the colloquially Singaporean Chicken Rice meal that was sponsored by Jetstar Asia on my flight.
Typically, budget flight seats are spaced like a practice routine for contortionists, but if you opt for the extra leg room seats which are near the emergency exit, it’s actually really comfy. That bit of extra leg room makes all the difference between reaching your destination feeling your legs, or feeling legs that aren’t yours.
Oh and being seated here means you’re in charge of breaking open the emergency exit in case anyone needs a swim. The air stewardess will teach you how to accomplish this feat.
Jetstar Chicken Rice ($11 SGD). Whoa whoa whoa. As a Singaporean you might be confused for having to pay $11 for chicken rice. I mean, the friendly neighborhood chicken rice uncle can get you a plate for $4 right? But at 30,000 feet up in the air, the chicken rice stall isn’t exactly a 5 minute walk away now is it.
Steamed fragrant rice with fried onions, roasted chicken and oriental vegetables served with chili sauce. Oriental vegetables, i.e carrots, brocolli and capsicum.
I like that they used a boneless chicken thigh, which was plump and easy to eat without messy bones. Let’s be honest; chicken breast is dry and falls behind in flavour.
Decent marination and fragrant enough rice lies beneath the meat. Given that it was still warm and made in large quantities, they actually did a pretty good job of preparing this dish. The sweet and spicy chili sauce is definitely a must-add to the chicken rice, further adding dimension and texture.
The meal also comes with a kit kat and mineral water for a complete meal.
Red Velvet Cupcake ($4). Exclusively baked by local chain Twelve Cupcakes, this moist and balanced pastry is something you don’t want to miss. I’m not a cupcake fan but I’ll have to admit the ones by Twelve cupcakes are worth wasting calories on. You can also get a Cupcake and Hot Beverage set for $6, if you would prefer to just have a light snack instead of a full meal.
Definitely I wouldn’t say the inflight Chicken Rice blew my mind, or can be compared to what local hawkers serve, but its definitely palatable and an option to consider if you’re starving up in the sky. Good attempt at replicating one of Singapore’s most iconic dishes and kudos to the awesome chili sauce.
