Food is undeniably tethered to our experiences and memories. Think of the time spent with loved ones over Christmas dinners, or meals for celebratory occasions. Conversely, our memories are also tied to the food we eat. Perhaps, deriving pleasure from indulging in certain dishes could be attributed to factors aside from taste.

For me, that is the humble Ramly burger. The combination of bread, egg, beef patties, and a concoction of mayonnaise and chilli sauce speaks to me on a deeper level which I can’t quite put into words. Running down to the night market with a crisp two dollar bill in hand, armed with a determination fuelled solely by Malaysian-styled burgers. That is the memory evoked whenever I sink my teeth into a Ramly-style burger.

So one can only imagine my excitement when I chanced across Big Burger Club, a stall nestled in a coffee shop in Ang Mo Kio. Dedicated to churning out burgers for hungry customers, this newly-opened establishment offers an impressive variety of bun-and-meat offerings. Among these are the Ramly-styled variants.

Available in Beef, Chicken, Benjo and Hot Dog options, the patties are laid across a thin layer of eggs on a griddle, before being wrapped up in an egg blanket and served between bread.

Other items on Big Burger Club’s menu include the Mala Mania. A chicken filet is topped with butterhead lettuce, tomato and mala cheese sauce to make for a fiery and delicious sandwich. On a more interesting note, the Vada Beets is a meatless option for veggie lovers. Here, a potato and beetroot vada patty takes centre stage, while garnished with a green and tamarind chutney.
