In a lively fusion of flavours, recently opened Habibi-san! styles itself as an alternative Middle Eastern izakaya (Japanese style casual bar). One glance at the attractive photos on their Instagram page has me ready to scuttle down to Haji Lane for a taste test.

The name ‘Habibi-san!’ is a clever amalgamation of two languages—Arabic and Japanese. It speaks of endearment and respect, a nod to the cuisines and flavours that the food takes inspiration from here.

Start off your meal at Habibi-san! with a Roasted Brussel Sprouts (S$16) for a fragrant combination of kinnogomadare (roasted Japanese sesame dressing), red cabbage pickles, jalapeño and bonito. Infusing smoky flavour and sweetness, this sounds like a tasty balance to the natural bitterness in Brussels sprouts.

From there, take your meal up a notch with the New Zealand Line Caught Snapper Sarma (S$28). Beautifully constructed, this dish involves a snapper fish wrapped in iceberg lettuce, yuzu buerre blanc, shaved fennel and apple salad. How’s that for a rich and decadent main course?

For a taste of the sea, try the Fremantle Octopus (S$23), livened up with macadamia tahini and lime. It might look simply plated, but that’s where the beauty lies.

Don’t forget to indulge in sweets while you’re at Habibi-san!. After all, did you really go to a place if you didn’t finish with dessert?

The indulgent Namastyle” Chocolate Tart (S$14) features 70% Guanaja chocolate, dulce de leche, peanuts, kinako cream, and sea salt. I find the caramel-and-chocolate combination such a tricky, yet rewarding, treat to come by.

Otherwise, try the Truffle Brie (S$13) for an assault of umami. It might be too overwhelming for some palates, but if you enjoy the aromas of truffle and cheese, this sounds like a real treat.

Habibi-san! also offers a Feeeeed Me! (S$58 per guest, minimum two guests) omakase option to remove the dilemmas of choosing. Sit back and let the chefs select your series of dishes to enjoy.

I wouldn’t wait much longer. Make a booking with them for your next date night extravaganza.
