By now, I’m pretty sure we all know the consequences that plastics have on our environment. Ever since the negative effects of single-use plastic came to light it has been apparent that Singaporeans have become more environmentally conscious—many of us now use our own straws, bring our own grocery bags and even tapau food in our very own containers.

As part of the nation’s efforts to curb the effects that plastics have on the environment and reduce the use of disposables in Singapore, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, Amy Khor, announced the Government’s plans to start public consultations on charging for plastic bags at supermarkets

With 25 existing NTUC Fairprice outlets already practising the ‘no plastic bag’ policy and retailers like Watsons, Uniqlo and H&M joining the movement for the charging for plastic bags; although this is not a brand new notion, my curiosity on Singaporean’s reaction to having to pay for their plastic bags led me to check out forums and Facebook comments on this issue.

As expected, a handful of comments deeply intrigued me and even left me feeling rather amused by the creativity that some of my fellow citizens have. Without further ado, here are my top 10 comments on how the Internet reacted when it comes to charging for plastic bags.
