New in town: Hong Kong Day. Cha Kee — Eatery with loaded bolo buns, satay beef macaroni & peanut butter French toast

Hong Kong Day. Cha Kee is an eatery opened by a pair of Hong Kong siblings that’s located at 165 Thomson Road right next to United Square. With a colour palette of green and red, the restaurant stands out from the sea of other establishments.

The interior is equally charming with vintage-looking tiles and wooden banquettes. It gives you the impression that you’ve teleported to Hong Kong for a short while.

The first thing that arrived at our table was the Peanut Butter French Toast (S$4.50). The delightful mini French toasts looked like mini golden ‘cushions’ of bread stacked up on a pool of rich honey. There was also a luxurious slab of butter on top.

I plunged my fork into one of the pieces and closed my eyes momentarily as I plunged into French toast euphoria.

The bread was encased in a flawless layer of golden-brown caramelised egg batter and the sweet honey that coated it made the combination super satisfying. You’re then greeted by a nutty and crunchy peanut butter filling which sealed the deal for me.

We then moved on to the Noodles Set (S$8.80). Here, you’ll get a noodle of your choice (Nissin noodles, macaroni, vermicelli and spaghetti) as well as 2 toppings, and it’s served with scrambled egg and butter toast.

We decided on the macaroni and added fried egg and satay beef (+S$2).

According to my colleague, Ansel, satay meat is apparently a thing in Hong Kong. Silly old me thought that the eatery tried to fuse Singapore’s satay with their dish to suit our local taste buds.

Upon taking my first mouthful of macaroni, the satay beef didn’t resemble anything like our localised dish. Instead, it was fragrant with a blend of spices which paired really well with the faintly herbal broth.

We also wanted to order the Bolo Bun with Pork Chop (S$6.80) but unfortunately it wasn’t available. So instead, we tried the Bolo Bun with Butter (S$2.50). The butter was creamy but we felt that the bun was a little dry and underwhelming.

For drinks, we got the cold HK Style Milk Tea (S$4). It was served in a cute bottle which resembled old-school soft drinks. It wasn’t so sweet and the tea was intense— really good stuff!

There are also other drinks like Yuzu Honey Soda (S$4.50) and Iced Lemon Ribena (S$4.50).
