I don’t know about you, but each time I enter a cafe, the sound of the coffee machines and the intoxicating aroma from a cup of Joe relaxes me. I’ve been eyeing The Bread Rack located at Space @ Kovan for some time and finally decided to give it a try!
I headed there on a Monday morning and the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the weekend crowd that I’m used to seeing— peaceful, calm and chill (just the way I like it).
There were groups of people working on their laptops and friends having a casual chat whilst sipping on beverages and enjoying some pastries.
Speaking of pastries, The Bread Rack handmakes their danish pastries, croissants and loaves of fresh sourdough bread daily. Everything looked so inviting through the glass display at the counter, and I took a while before my fickle-minded self came to a decision.
What I tried at The Bread Rack
I took the first step onto bread haven with the Truffle Mushrooms Danish (S$6.80). It was an almond-shaped pastry filled with slices of shitake mushrooms, parmesan cheese shavings and chopped parsley.
As my fork and knife sunk into the Danish, I could hear satisfying crackling sounds that made me a tad hungrier.
The sliced mushrooms were perfumed with the delicate aroma of truffle, which paired so well with its smoky earthy flavour. The buttery layers of the pastry were so light like pillowy clouds— absolutely scrumptious!
As I proceeded further towards the centre, layers of cream cheese appeared like tiny surprises. The creaminess of it immediately balanced out the sharp notes coming from the shaved parmesan. This was a good start to my morning!
I then moved on to the next dish, the Salted Caramel Cube Croissant (S$5.80). It was a perfect cube-shaped pastry with all of its edges on-point. There was a glistening layer of caramel at the top garnished with walnuts.
Upon ‘destroying’ the croissant, there was a mini tsunami of yellow cream gushing out from within. Within seconds, my plate had a tiny puddle of goodness in the middle— perfect as a dip for my croissant.
The taste had the best of both worlds, sweet and savoury at the same time. The chefs at The Bread Rack had calibrated the perfect recipe which didn’t overwhelm me 3 to 4 mouthfuls in. Good job, guys!
The next dish I tried was the Scrambled Eggs Croissant (S$8.90). At first glance, the scrambled egg looked like an entire omelette being stuffed into the croissant.
“Will it be dry and hard?” I thought to myself.
I dived straight in for the egg and cut it in half, and was greeted by a luscious runny texture that depicts perfectly-executed scrambled eggs. However, that being said, I wish that it wasn’t served in an entire piece which gives off the wrong perception.
The buttery croissant managed to maintain its crispy flaky texture even with the ingredients sitting inside. The juicy tomatoes and crunchy Romaine lettuce added a touch of freshness to the rich egg.
We ended our delightful breakfast with the Cinnamon Swirl (S$4.80). It was a lovely golden brown circular pastry with bits of char on its surface.
The charred bits gave off bitter notes but immediately integrated together with the sweetness coming from the sugar coating.
The pastry was fluffy and possessed the same texture as a brioche bun. As I’m not much of a cinnamon fan, I appreciated that the flavour was mellow. However, it may not appeal to those who love it.
Final Thoughts
The Bread Rack is one of those cafes which produces everything on its own at the back of the house. I was able to taste the difference between their products and those places that get theirs off the shelf.
Come chill the afternoon away with a nice cup of coffee and a great book.
Expected damage: S$9 – S$17 per pax
