Popular Kyoto Cafe Kurasu has just set up their 2nd outlet in Somerset at Orchard Building. Their first location at Waterloo gained fame quickly as it adopted a bright aesthetic, with large windows allowing sunlight to fall into the cafe. In reverse, at its newest location, you can expect to be greeted by an oak centrepiece surrounded by concrete furnishings. A sleek yet moody first impression is created instead.

The outlet functions mostly as a takeaway kiosk. After viewing the menu from outside the cafe, you can watch the baristas work their magic as they prepare your drinks. Although a small seating space is present, I think it would be a challenge to snag them. Long queues have already begun to form despite the cafe opening so recently on 7 Apr 2023!

Apart from the usual espresso-based beverages, they offer an extensive list of Hand Drip Coffee (from S$7.50). One item on their menu, Today’s Hot Coffee (S$5), particularly piqued my interest— it is only for sale from 9.30am to 2pm daily.

Regular green tea is made by steeping tea leaves in hot water and discarding them. On the other hand, matcha is made by finely grinding the tea leaves into a powder and whisking it into hot water.

I discovered Kurasu with their best-seller, the Matcha Latte Espresso (S$7.50), which features an espresso shot poured over sweetened milk-based matcha. For those who prefer non dairy options, both Soy and Oat milk are available. To all serious matcha drinkers, the Ceremonial Matcha (S$8.50) may be the best option for you. Additionally, I reckon the iced Matcha Calpis Soda (S$7.50) would be a popular selection on a hot and humid afternoon.

Otherwise, alternative selections include Hojicha Latte (S$7), Chocolate (S$7), and Cascara Tea (S$7), which features fruity and juicy undertones.

Kurasu joins the many cafes sprouting up and around town recently. Drop by for one of their specialty drinks after a shopping haul the next time you’re in need of a thirst quencher!
