For someone like me who lives in a mature estate, a new kopitiam isn’t a big deal when there are food options aplenty nearby. But a little birdy told me that for newer estates, it’s heaven-sent whenever a new food place opens. Residents of Rivervale Shores now have more food options with the official grand opening of 9S coffee shop.

9s coffee shop - front

Pronounced as ‘nice’, 9S features a total of 6 Muslim-friendly stalls and a drinks stall.

9s coffee shop - zi char

I gasped when the stall assistant at L&M Seafood handed me their menu. With nearly 170 zi char dishes spread across 4 pages, my eyeballs nearly popped out of my sockets in disbelief.

Wow! Definitely great news for customers but if I were a chef here, I’d be overwhelmed by the amount of misc en place to prepare on a daily basis (saluting the cooks here). Okay, back to reality! I gave the Beef Mee Goreng (S$6) a go.

The beef slices were decently tender and wok hei was present. The only thing that I didn’t enjoy was the overuse of ketchup, which made it slightly too sweet for my palate.

9s coffee shop - chicken rice

To get your chicken rice fix, focus your attention on FBB Nasi Ayam that dishes out plates of Steam/Roasted Chicken Rice (S$3.80), Malaysia Spice Crispy Chicken Rice (S$5.80), Black Pepper Chicken Rice (S$4.80) and Cheesy Chicken Rice (S$5.20).

You can also try side dishes like Thai Style Crispy Tofu (S$5/S$7) and Wanton Soup (S$6.50 for 8 pieces).

9s coffee shop - curry chicken noodles

I ordered the Curry Chicken Noodle (S$5.80) which came with giant potato cubes and chicken pieces. The noodles were seasoned well and had a good bite, resembling the ones served at wanton mee stalls.

The curry was robust, chicken was tender and the potatoes were fluffy. The chilli was also tangy and appetite-inducing. Overall, I had no complaints. There was even a pot of soup for you to help yourself to.

9s coffee shop - Tenderbest

I’m sure most people know about Tenderbest. What sets this outlet at 9S coffee shop apart  is that rice bowls are served here.

rice bowls

Choose from 4 different varieties: Truffle Beef Rice Bowl (S$12.90), Thai Basil Chicken Rice Bowl (S$6.90), Teriyaki Chicken Rice Bowl (S$6.90) and Chicken Luncheon Meat Rice Bowl (S$7.90).

I highly recommend the Thai Basil Chicken Rice Bowl, which was the only flavour that made me want to order it again. Flavoured yellow rice is topped with the flavourful Thai-style minced chicken, edamame and a tornado scrambled egg on top— a delightful combination, indeed.

Shahith

Shahith Ar Raheeq is the only stall at 9S coffee shop that opens at 6.30am. You can choose from 15 types of sweet and savoury prata options including Coin Prata Set (S$4 for 4 pieces), Prata Egg with Cheese (S$3.50), Plain Prata Set (S$2.40 for 2 pieces) and Prata Banana (S$2.50).

You can also get Mutton Chop (S$7), Roti John with Chicken (S$8) and something unique called Satti Sorru (S$8.50/S$12.50). It’s a claypot briyani dish served with a sunny-side-up, and your choice of mutton, chicken, sardine, prawn, vegetables or ikan bilis.

9s coffee shop - nasi padang

There’s also a nasi padang stall with options like Chicken 65 (S$2), Ayam Masak Merah (S$4), Beef Guilai (S$4), Kerabu Squid (S$4) and Salted Egg Prawn (S$4).

If you’re sick of the food at Rivervale Plaza, come check out 9S coffee shop instead. You can even shop for groceries after your meal at FairPrice a few doors down.
