Popular dessert spot, Ah Chew Desserts, has announced the closure of its Novena outlet in early Mar, as it will be relocating to Cineleisure Orchard by mid Mar 2023. Its Novena outlet was opened back in Apr 2014.

The news was first announced on Ah Chew Desserts’ Facebook page. Understandably, the move came as a surprise to many as the Novena outlet has formed a proper base crowd. Cineleisure Orchard has also seen a massive slump in traffic in recent years, with many storefronts in the mall being bordered up.

Ah Chew Desserts first started out as a half-shop space along Liang Seah Street back in Sep 2003. They slowly expanded and occupied the whole shop, and are still open at that same location to this day. They are known for their traditional Chinese desserts, which boast over 50 options to choose from as well as being open till midnight.

When we reviewed it back in 2019, we enjoyed all of the desserts there. The Yam Paste with Gingko Nuts (S$3.50) had a thick creamy consistency with bits of yams thrown into the mix. It also wasn’t too sweet.

Similarly, the Rock Sugar White Fungus Papaya with Almond Paste (S$4.50), despite having rock sugar as its main ingredient, had just the right amount of sweetness with the fragrant almond paste easily balancing out the flavours.

We also highly recommend the Durian Mango Sago with Pomelo (S$6.60) for durian lovers. It had generous portions of large sweet mango chunks and mildly sour pomelo pulps to balance out the sweetness. There was also frozen durian flesh which added to the creaminess of the dessert.

Who knows, Ah Chew Desserts’ move to Cineleisure Orchard will mark the start of the mall’s revival!
