When it comes to airline food, most of us will have the impression that dishes served in-flight are cold and tasteless. Thus, when an airline company decides to open their very own restaurant, you know that they are not joking about the quality of the food they serve during their flights.
AirAsia took on the task of debunking that misconception with the opening of its flagship on-ground restaurant, Santan—meaning ‘coconut’ in Malay—in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 3 December 2019.
Situated on the first floor of Mid Valley Megamall, the restaurant specialises in selling favourites from Southeast Asia, such as Pak Nasser’s Nasi Lemak (RM12, ~S$4), Uncle Chin’s Chicken Rice (RM12, ~S$4), Nyonya Curry Laksa (RM12, ~S$4) and Chicken Satay With Peanut Sauce (RM10, ~S$3.30), with the mission of bringing delicious ASEAN flavours to the world.
Unlike the airline menu, the list of dishes sold at Santan has a wider variety as the restaurant does not face the space constraints as compared to an airplane.
Expect to see Santan outlets coming into Singapore and grow beyond the ASEAN region as there are already plans to expand the restaurant chain internationally. The management aims to have five owned Santan restaurants and 100 franchise-operated restaurants and cafes within the next three to five years!
I’m pretty sure that the food served at the restaurant will taste as good or even better than those that are served in-flight. Head to Santan at Mid Valley Megamall to see for yourself if there are any distinct differences!
