New in town: Ajumma’s, Bukit Panjang — Hearty, comforting Korean flavours in your neighbourhood

As an avid fan of Korean cuisine, I was devastated when Ajumma’s announced the closure of its first outlet at The Cathay. After all, it was a restaurant that I held close to heart, a place where my husband and I enjoyed countless date nights before heading to the movies.

Well, it seems like it’s about time to wipe off those lingering tears as Ajumma’s is back with their newly renovated outlet at Bukit Panjang Plaza

With a menu similar to their existing outlet at Funan Mall, you can expect the same quality of authentic, hearty Korean dishes to be served at Bukit Panjang Plaza.

Start off your meal with their Fluffy Steamed Egg (S$5.90), a yellow cloud of light and delicate steamed egg seated in a traditional Korean stone pot. Although the dish lies on the sweeter side, it makes for a great pairing with your richer mains as it creates a welcome contrast that will keep you wanting more.

Ajumma’s also offers main dishes that are perfect even if you are dining alone. For a taste of the comforting flavours of Korea, opt for their Kimchi Fried Rice (S$12.90). Aromatic and generously laden with cabbage, shredded nori, and shrimp, this is literally a quick meal fix in a bowl.

For a soupy treat this rainy season, the Jjampong (S$17.90) will delight with its piping hot and amazingly flavourful soup. Bobbing in the spicy red broth is a trove of seafood, including the likes of prawns, mussels, squid, and even crab!

If you are looking for a non-spicy treat suitable for both the young and old, Ajumma’s Signature Beef Kalbi (S$14.90) is a crowd favourite that will do the trick. Seasoned with bulgogi sauce, every piece is melt-in-your-mouth tender with a tinge of sweet savouriness. It also comes with a bowl of rice and side dishes—wholesome and delicious.

Not all Korean eateries serve a stellar dessert on their menu. At Ajumma’s, let your mind be blown away by their Chapssal Red Bean Donuts ($7.90 for five pieces).

A popular Autumn snack in Korea, these red bean donuts have a texture similar to mochi, though less dense and satisfyingly chewy. Served with vanilla ice cream and pine nuts, these Chapssal Red Bean Donuts are a great way to end your meal at Ajumma’s.

Heading to Funan Mall for Ajumma’s this holiday season can be a hassle. If you live around Bukit Panjang, why not visit their new outlet to get your cravings satisfied? I’m pretty sure you won’t regret it.
