Quick Summary

409 AMK Market and Food Centre, which reopened on 8 August 2026, is home to two contrasting char kway teow stalls: Bendemeer Fresh Cockles Fried Kway Teow and Har Mee. Both offer plates from S$4.50, with differences in sweetness, wok hei, texture and pork lard. This comparison helps diners choose between a sweeter, wetter rendition and a drier, more savoury version, with Bendemeer emerging as the overall winner.

Char kway teow is a hawker dish that’s not very well received as it has a reputation of being oily and sinful, but it’s also one of my top 3 local food picks that I indulge in every now and then. 409 AMK Market And Food Centre reopened on 8 Aug 2026 and for this round’s friendly battle, I decided to pit 2 stalls from there — Bendemeer Fresh Cockles Fried Kway Teow and Har Mee, a relatively new addition to the hawker centre.

What is char kway teow?

amk ckt battle - char kway teow

With its strong roots in the Teochew community, char kway teow is a dish I grew up eating, all thanks to my late paternal Teochew grandmother, who used to sell it alongside carrot cake at an army canteen. It’s a noodle dish that combines flat kway teow and yellow mee, stir-fried to wok hei gloriousness together with dark/light soy sauce, sambal, oyster sauce, kecap manis, tau geh, fishcake, lup cheong, cockles, pork lard, and egg.

What makes a good char kway teow?

Everyone has differing opinions on what makes a great plate of char kway teow. Personally, I feel it should have a good balance of sweet and savoury, possess a decent amount of wok hei, and be perfumed with the taste and aroma of pork lard.

Why these contenders?

In 2025, Bendemeer Fresh Cockles Fried Kway Teow made headlines when the owner passed on his char kway teow cooking skills to his special needs son. After being diagnosed with cancer and with his wife having suffered a stroke, he had considered folding the business for good. However, the encouragement of his regular customers gave him the strength to keep the stall going. On the other hand, Har Mee is a newer addition that relocated from a nearby neighbourhood kopitiam. Run by a Singaporean man and his Thai wife, the stall specialises in prawn noodles but also serves char kway teow, which the wife is in charge of frying.

I watched as the son took his time to fry the char kway teow orders plate by plate, with his mum closely supervising him. The stall offers S$4.50 and S$5.50 portions. As the plates of char kway teow were distributed to the customers before me, they left behind a fragrant smoky aroma in its wake.

After the first mouthful of my S$4.50 plate, I felt that the char kway teow had a classic, old-school nostalgic flavour with decent wok hei that is relatively difficult to find. Mind you, this was not cooked by an experienced uncle but by a much younger person who recently learnt the ropes. Needless to say, I was impressed.

The flavour of the sweet sauce was on the stronger side and as for someone who loves his char kway teow on the sweet side, this was got me excited! The noodles were on the wetter side, with a mild peppery kick that crept in towards the end of each mouthful.

The rest of the ingredients were awesome — the lup cheong was flavourful, cockles were fresh and plump, and the fishcake was great. If I had one tiny complaint, it would be the lack of pork lard. I only got to enjoy one or two small pieces and I wished there was more to enhance the overall unctuousness.

Har Mee

Har Mee offers Char Kway Teow in 3 different sizes — S$4.50, S$5.50, and S$6.50. When my S$4.50 plate arrived, my eyes lit up at the generous portion; it was slightly larger than the one served at the other stall. The noodles also looked noticeably drier and lighter. True to its appearance, the kway teow mee was less sweet than its competitor’s. I reckon those who prefer Penang-style char kway teow would take to this version better.

The wok flavour was present, though it didn’t quite pack the same punch as the one from Bendemeer. Flavour-wise, the noodles were savoury and delicious, with a mild peppery kick that crept in towards the end of each bite. What made me even happier was discovering 5 to 6 pieces of pork lard scattered throughout the plate — a shiok bonus, indeed!

Rather than me revealing who the winner is right now, let me pose the question back to you — what’s your favourite rendition of char kway teow? If you’re like me who prefers a wetter style with sufficient wok flavour and sweet notes, then Bendemeer Fresh Cockles Fried Kway Teow is the place for you. Otherwise, if a slightly more savoury version with slightly lesser wok hei interests you more, then I’ll recommend Har Mee.

This char kway teow showdown was a tough one, as both stalls were almost neck and neck. Ultimately, it came down to my personal preferences, and after much deliberation, I hereby crown Bendemeer Fresh Cockles Fried Kway Teow the winner of this round!
