Crickets are considered delicacies in certain countries around the world—Mexico, Thailand and China included. Japan is joining in by making consuming crickets and other insects a norm in their society now.
Following the launch of cricket ramen, cricket soy sauce and cricket craft gin, Antcicada Japan is now introducing Cricket Dark Ale for everyone to enjoy.
Bred and manufactured by Taiyo Green Energy Co., Ltd, these domestic crickets are raised on a specially-designed farm in Fukushima Prefecture under optimal temperature for growth. Fed with fresh vegetables and food from corporate food loss, these crickets are deemed safe to consume.
Collaborating with Tono Brewing, Antcicada will be available at Tono Brewing’s Tap Room at after 15 March 2020.
The crickets are then roasted with roasted malt and added to the wort to extract the maximum scent of umami from the critters.
It’s been said that the taste of the craft beer has notes of coffee, cacao and hints of chamomile, bringing out the bitterness and richness of the beverage. If you hold it in your mouth, you can even detect a slight caramel aroma.
If you’re willing to have a taste of the world’s first cricket craft beer, head down to the pop-up store at COMINGSOON in Tokyo, Shibuya on 15 – 18 March 2020 from 10am – 11pm. Admission is free, so bring your friends to go on this adventure with you.
For more information about the pop-up event, visit their website. Do take note it’s fully in Japanese.
If you’re in Tokyo and you’re up for a challenge, head down to the pop-up store at COMINGSOON Food Court beside Antcicada to give the world’s first cricket craft beer a taste test. It sure takes guts, but I personally feel it might be worth it.
