10 Best Buffalo Chicken Wings in Singapore Guaranteed to Make You Sweat

best-buffalo-wings-singapore

Singaporeans love chicken wings (ok, most of the world does too). It’s comfort food and judging by the number of eateries offering them or even specialising in just wings is astounding. However, everyone has a preference to how they like their chicken wings prepared – some like them Korean Yangnum style (double layer of chilli), Southern style (buttermilk and cayenne), Cantonese Cze Char style (Prawn Paste), Buffalo Style (hot and sour sauce), etc.

I like my sour and spicy American Buffalo Wings. They should taste peppery spicy (many places offer different degrees enough to melt your tongue) with a hint of sour from Tabasco or vinegar; so anything with BBQ sauce is definitely not counted as Buffalo Wings. If it comes naked, its also not consider buffalo chicken wings.

Most importantly, it has to be chicken wings not chicken drumlets. The wings can be fried, deep fried or even grilled but the sides need to be sticks of celery and blue cheese dip. This is how the authentic Buffalo Wings should be served and hopefully this guide will help you find the best and authentic ones in Singapore. Wings away!

1. Spruce At Fire Station, Upper Bukit Timah

best buffalo chicken wings singapore spruce wings

What I like about spruce is the hot sauce comes as a dip instead of being basted all over the crispy fried wings. This way, the wings don’t get soggy as fast and you are able to control the amount of hot sauce – I like a 50:50 mixture of sauce and cheese.

2. Brewerkz (Dempsey)

best buffalo chicken wings singapore brewerkz

Brewerkz has several outlets around town but my preferred outlet is the one at Dempsey. The buffalo chicken wings at this outlet go very well with the in-house brews, after all they are more sweet-sourish rather than spicy. So if you want to enjoy your brew without the destruction of your taste buds, drop by!

3. Smokey’s BBQ

This place is authentic as it can be since the co-owner, Jeremy, hails from Buffalo, New York. My American friends can attest to it being better than those found back in ‘murica – yes they eat other things, not just fast food. Do drop by on Wednesdays for their “Wing Wednesday” where their buffalo chicken wings go for just $1 each.

Just a short stroll from Colbar is Chuckwagon BBQ & Grill. The tranquility of the area makes it a great place just to relax and enjoy a slow paced meal. The buffalo chicken wings have unique names – good, bad and ugly (essentially spicy levels 1, 2, 3). If you are game enough, there are off the menu levels up to level 10 that you can try at your own risk.

5. Southwest Tavern @ Tradehub 21

best buffalo chicken wings singapore Southwest Tavern

I found this place by chance while fiddling with the Entertainer App last year. Located in a light industrial complex, it’s probably the last place you would except an establishment like this to exist. Irregardless, they do a really good buffalo wings, called the Suicide Wings – it’s more spicy than the usual buffalo wings.

The secret weapon of mass stomach destruction is the Jolokia pepper, aka ‘Ghost pepper’, which is rated 900 times more spicy than tabasco pepper on the Scoville scale which measures spiciness. If hot wings are too mainstream for you, take up the Spaghetti from hell challenge (I’m too chicken to try it, the wings are already hot enough).

Operating hours: 11am to 12am (Daily)

6. Buckaroo BBQ & Grill

Apparently this place has been in existence for many years in idlic Sembawang road, but I only came across it after it shifted to Upper Bukit Timah about a year and half ago. The wings are marinated for 12 hours before being cooked. 10 levels of extreme spiciness are on offer, each with a different assortment of chillis.

Operating hours: 4pm to 10.30pm (Closed Tue)

7. Hooters

Yes. Hooters. Don’t get me wrong, the eye candy here is definitely an attraction for some, but the pub grubs is pretty swell as well. The wings served here are more orientated toward the caucasian crowd – more tangy than spicy. So if spice isn’t you middle name do check up Hooters for the sights food.

Address: Blk 3D, River Valley Road, Clarke Quay #01-03 Shophouse Row,  Singapore 179023 | Website
Operating hours: 11am to 12am (Sun to Thu), 11am to 2am (Fri/Sat)

8. Timbre @ Gillman

If you enjoy the peace of Dempsey but dread the ever growing crowds, Gillman village is probably the next best alternative. Timbre @ Gillman has a local twist on the traditional hot buffalo wings recipe using sambal as its chilli base.

Address: 9A Lock Road, Singapore 108937 |
Operating hours: 4pm to 11pm (Mon to Thu), 5pm to 12.30am (Fri/Sat)

9. Handle Bar

Handle Bar serves western cuisine predominantly and is very packed over the weekends even thought its literally located in the forest at Sembawang. The signature Spicy Cocaine Wings ($12) even at medium spicy level, made my tongue almost catch fire. So if you’re adventurous you can try the maximum hardcore spicy level to work up a sweat. The only non-authenticity here is the lack of dipping sauce and celery, but I’ll make an exception because there are just so damn good.

Editor’s End Notes

These are pretty much my usual haunts for buffalo wings. Are you a fan of buffalo wings as well? I’m sure I missed out a few and would definitely love to know what you think of my selection and please do share your own personal favourites as well. Remember, it must be coated with spice and hopefully accompanied with blue cheese to be considered authentic. If it’s just fried chicken with no sauce or some random sweet glaze, it’s not buffalo wings.
