If you’re wondering whether the West offers any good dessert places then look no further, because Bojio Cafe has recently opened its doors at Westgate Mall.
With a concept similar to its sister outlet Meet & Melt, they serve everything from Lava and Shibuya Toasts to Over-The-Top Milkshakes. What you should really come for though, is the Raclette Cheese & Mentaiko Lava Toast, which are rather new items on the dessert menu.
The cafe itself boasts a rather simple layout, with black and white accents making up the bulk of the interior. But trust me, when I say that the black tables make great backdrops for your Instagram pictures when placed in contrast with the colourful dessert plates.
For starters, we had the Raclette Cheese Toast ($18.90) with Charcoal Ice Cream (+$1). Usually, all toast sets come with a complimentary single scoop of ice cream, but premium flavors will incur an additional charge.
A slab of raclette cheese is melted over the heated machine, ensuring that each order is served warm and with the right melty consistency.
Freshly scraped off onto the toast, the raclette cheese was stringy and came in an extremely generous portion. In fact, the cheese covered the entire toast and even flowed down over the edges. Now, that is what I call a decadent dessert.
Paired with the Shibuya toast, the gooey raclette cheese was simply the best when eaten together with mouthfuls of the buttery bread. While the exterior of the toast is crisp, it had a much fluffier texture on the inside, which really complemented the heavier tasting dairy component.
Together with the scoop of charcoal ice cream, this dessert dish struck a good balance between savoury and sweet. The fruity pebbles strewn across the plate and chocolate coated marshmallows on the side also serves to add a pop of colour to it — making for an Instagram-worthy picture indeed.
Although the first dessert plate was filling enough, we couldn’t leave without first sampling another of the new arrivals on their menu. Paired with Mentaiko Sauce (+$2) and a scoop of Speculoos Ice Cream (+$1), the Charcoal Lava Toast ($16.90) certainly did not pale in comparison to the Raclette Cheese Toast.
Mentaiko in a dessert combination was definitely a first for me, so I didn’t really know what to expect. But this was surprisingly compatible with the toast. We thoroughly enjoyed the savoury taste of the mentaiko filling and bonito flakes paired with the charcoal lava toast.
Not to mention, the torched mentaiko on top that had a seriously smoky flavour.
Made from Lotus biscuits, the Speculoos ice cream also brought about a refreshing touch to the table. This helped to even out the dense lava filling of mentaiko mayonnaise and added just the right amount of sweetness that we needed.
If mentaiko doesn’t sit well with you, then you can always opt for the other lava fillings on the menu. There’s an extensive selection of flavours ranging from Thai Milk Tea and Green Milk Tea to Salted Egg, Earl Grey and many more.
The next time you’re craving for a dessert that has that perfect cross between sweet and savoury, you know where to go! Just remember to “jio” your friends too.
