Olive oil on ice cream, nasi lemak gelato, strawberry sambal — the past decade has witnessed some truly atrocious food combinations, leaving netizens both amazed and appalled. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Famous Amos re-emerges recently with their limited-edition Nasi Lemak Bungkus cookies.
As a casual fan of Famous Amos, I can attest that one bag is never sufficient. These delicate, bite-sized treats are irresistibly addictive, with their crumbly texture ensuring that you barely notice when the bag is empty.
While I sometimes feel uneasy about unexpected twists on classic flavours, I remain open to unconventional food pairings — provided they taste good. Having already sampled savoury cookies before, such as laksa and salted egg flavours, I was compelled to try these nasi lemak-inspired treats.
I visited the nearest Famous Amos outlet and bought a small bag for RM12.50, which is filled with 100g worth of orange-coloured cookies. Right off the bat, I was already gulping in fear when I saw the bright hue paired with… chocolate chips.
While optimistic at first, the chocolate chips definitely threw me off. I’m aware of the existence of savoury chocolate sauce — mole, to be exact, which is a Mexican sauce made from hot chiles, tomatillos, spices, and chocolate — but for cookies?
My colleague, however, took a large bite and delivered her verdict: “I don’t like it.” Her comment was straightforward and to the point. Although the cookie is meant to evoke the flavour of nasi lemak, she detected primarily the sweetness of the milk chocolate chips with an overwhelming hint of lemongrass.
After eating 2 more, she scrambled for water to soothe her parched throat. To conclude, the cookies are composed of roughly 75% sweetness and 25% lemongrass, and they tend to leave you feeling quite thirsty.
