“It’s makan time, what do I want to eat?” I am certain this question pops up in your head daily. We probably get sick and tired of going to the same old places after a while. First world problem, perhaps.
Well, some good news for those who reside at Tanjong Pagar! Muslim-friendly Gila Makan opened its first outlet at 100 AM Mall on 1 June 2022. Similar to the concept of Ion’s Hawker Street, Gila Makan is the brainchild of four friends with food and beverage experience. They wanted to create a new place as Muslim-friendly eateries are very scarce these days.
Gila Makan also collaborates with Social Kitchen (a social enterprise) to employ mentally-challenged individuals who will help out with back-of-the-house operations.
There are six stalls in total occupying the space. They are Brani By Briyani 47, Steel Pot By Mooteow, Mama Lemak, Hoppers By The Ceylonese Affair, Walf & Co. By Wild Market and a beverage stall.
Brani By Briyani 47— a famed briyani outlet that serves various Bangladeshi-style briyani like Mutton Briyani (S$13.90) and Fish Briyani (S$12.90). Spice enthusiasts can order their Devil Chicken Briyani (S$10.90) for a fiery kick.
Steel Pot By Mooteow— Mooteow was well known for serving up Teochew-style beef kway teow and they were once located at Boat Quay. Over at Gila Makan, they will be selling classics like Beef Kway Teow With Sliced Beef (S$8.80), With Beef Ball (S$8.80), and Mixed Beef With Tendon ($10.80).
Mama Lemak— from the people that brought you Beach Road Nasi Lemak at Wild Market Shaw Towers, Mama Lemak offers options such as Nasi Lemak With Chicken Wing (S$8.90), Nasi Lemak With Sambal Cuttlefish (S$11.90), and for vegetarians, Nasi Lemak With Tofu ($8.90). They also have side dishes like Otah Fries (S$3.90) and Quail Egg Sambal ($3.90).
Hoppers By The Ceylonese Affair— offers sweet appam choices such as Ice Cream Hopper (S$7.50) and Banana Chocolate (S$7.50) as well as savoury ones such as Bulls Eye Hoppers ($4.50) and Egg Pepper Hoppers With Cheeni Chambal (S$6). Hoppers used to be located at Space @ Kovan.
Walf & Co. By Wild Market— western stall selling pasta such as Fried Chicken Aglio Olio (S$10.90) and Mushroom Aglio Olio (S$9.90), All Day breakfast (S$13.90), and an array of waffles like Ice Cream Walfs (S$7.90) and Vege Walfs (S$11.90). Wild Market was a similar food court concept that opened at Shaw Towers Beach Road which has ceased to exist.
Gila Makan’s drink stall will sell classic beverages and a few interesting options like Root Beer Float (S$4), Gula Melaka Coffee (S$2.50), and Iced Horlicks Dinosaur (S$3.40).
I will be heading there real soon to satisfy my beef noodle cravings, and give their appam a go!
