With the current ‘circuit breaker’ measures in place, the full force of COVID-19 and all its implications is being felt acutely, especially by those who are working frontline jobs in many industries. One of the sectors hit hardest are our beloved hawkers, who don’t have the means to deliver their food, unlike restaurants who have food delivery partners. Thus, the Hawkers United – Dabao 2020 Facebook Group was born, to help hawkers to reach out to the community.
For a group that was only created on 3 April 2020, the Facebook Group has quickly gained traction on social media, having racked up a total of 140,058 members and counting. Sporting their very own hashtag #HawkersUnited2020, this platform empowers hawkers and small F&B business owners by enabling them to reach out to a wider audience and offer delivery services or discounts.
For F&B owners who plan to list their offerings such as delivery options and discounts, the administrative owners of the group have created a comprehensive guide to create a post.
- Create a Photo Album
- Name Photo Album under your shop name (insert a hyperlink to your website where orders can be placed if applicable)
- Create the landing image
- Use a photo of your shop name with it clearly displayed
- Upload photos of your menu
- Insert enticing pictures of your food
- Upload all of it and wait for approval
They have also started using ‘units’ to categorise each restaurant or stall into specific areas of Singapore, so that these hawkers are more searchable. This can be done by pinning your earlier post to the unit (area of Singapore your restaurant is in e.g. Tanjong Pagar, Chinatown) by clicking the three-dot icons on the top right of your post and selecting ‘add to units’. After which, create a title with your food items or name and upload!
It’s been so reassuring to see how much support the Hawkers United – Dabao 2020 Facebook Group has been getting, and how these hawkers and small F&B owners have remained optimistic and they continue to press on against all odds. After seeing the success of Hawkers United and how it’s helped so many, others have followed suit by creating similar groups to assist other types of F&B owners, like the Bakery and Cafes Delivery Group and another group for delivery matters.
Even if you aren’t a hawker, you can still join these groups as a consumer and offer your support by buying their items via DM or comment! If you’re not already a part of these groups, join them now and share them with your friends in the spirit of #SGUnited and also #HawkersUnited2020.
