best-rated hor fun - stall front

Now, is it really as good as everyone says, or is it overhyped? Whenever my hopes are high, I often end up disappointed when the food turns out lacklustre. Therefore, keeping my expectations in check, I made my way down to check them out.

Something to note: while Google states that the stall opens at 10am, it actually starts operations only at 10.30am and closes around 2.30pm for its first shift. Those who are planning a visit might want to jot this down.

The stall is operated by 2 gentlemen — a senior master sporting a punk-rock mohawk who wok fries the wide rice noodles, and a younger man handling orders and plating.

While waiting for my food to be prepared, I struck up a conversation with the friendly guy in front and learnt that the stall has been operating for close to 20 years.

He shared with a laugh, “I just met one of my regulars who ate here since he was a student. He’s now an army regular for the past 6 years, and I was just telling him that he had just make me realise how ancient I actually am!” Friendly service, good vibes, the food looks great — I’m off to a good start.

What to order at Hin Fried Hor Fun With Prawn Beef Sliced Fish

The menu features a total of 12 dishes, consisting of 6 hor fun and 6 mui fan options with various protein pairings. With everything priced at S$6, calculating the total amount, especially for bulk orders, is a piece of cake.

best-rated hor fun - beef hor fun

I started things off with the Fried Hor Fun W/ Beef. The glorious, saucy plate consisted of hor fun sheets drenched in a light brown egg-drop gravy, topped with luscious beef slices slathered with a deep brown sauce, then crowned with boiled cabbage. Visually, it whetted my appetite and I couldn’t wait to dig in.

Fragrant and smoky, each sheet of hor fun was wok-kissed long enough to develop an addictive flavour without being overly intense. I’m not sure if you’ll agree with what I’m about to say, but sticky, overly-gooey gravy is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to hor fun. Thankfully, they nailed the consistency here — thick enough to coat every element, yet light enough to glide down my throat with ease. Seasoning-wise, it was light yet tasty.

best-rated hor fun - beef slices

The beef slices were unbelievably tender, though the texture suggested that some tenderiser may have been used, and slightly muted the meat’s natural flavour. Even so, they were enjoyable. The cabbage pieces were slightly crunchy and naturally sweet, which helped to mellow down the dish’s overall richness.

I then shifted my attention to the Fried Hor Fun W/ Sliced Fish & Prawn. Unlike the previous dish, the hor fun was drenched in a thick, egg gravy that was paler in colour, making it look less dense. It came with 3 peeled prawns with their tails attached, a few slices of fish, and blanched cabbage.

Once again, I was blown away by the wok hei essence of the hor fun. The fish slices were firm and fresh while the prawns were succulent and bouncy.

The sauce, due to the absence of the rich brown beef gravy, felt lighter but still flavourful.
