As you may already know, Old Airport Road Food Centre is slated to close for 4 months of renovation work from 1 Jun to 30 Sep 2024. Don’t be disheartened, though! You’ve got another month to enjoy the fare from your favourite stalls and check out others, too. If you haven’t already, why not give Hougang Otah a try?
Judging by their not-so-vibrant stall front and the limited number of reviews on their Google Maps profile, Hougang Otah may come across as just another under-the-radar hawker stall. Little do you know, they havenearly 30 years of experience under their belt.
They specialise in none other than a range of mouth-watering otah handcrafted with a refined fish paste recipe that incorporates the finest ingredients. The result? Many satisfied customers and expansion into several outlets islandwide. They also run a catering business that offers their products both fresh and frozen.
Okay, you technically won’t be missing out if you don’t manage to catch their Old Airport Road stall before the food centre closes. However, it wouldn’t hurt to treat yourself to several of their delicious banana leaf-wrapped goods while you’re there.
I don’t know about you, but I’ll definitely be drawn to their range of 7 types of otah. If you’re an otah purist, you’ll enjoy the classic Chilli Fish Otah (S$0.70) and its upsized counterpart, Banana Leaf Otah (S$1.20). These tantalising delights offer a delicious balance of savoury, creamy and spicy notes. There’s also the Non-Chilli Fish Otah (S$0.70) for those who prefer milder flavours.
Alternatively, if you’re down for something more unique, opt for the Fish Head Otah, Sotong Otah, Prawn Otah or Crabmeat Otah instead. Albeit priced a little higher at S$1.90 per piece, these are absolutely worth the semi-splurge.
Hougang Otah also offers packets of Nasi Lemak for just S$1.50. These classic pyramid-shaped parcels are packed with fragrant coconut rice, fried fish, crispy ikan bilis and, of course, a spicy aromatic sambal.
Now, think about it — if you add a slice of otah to your Nasi Lemak, a full meal will set you back just S$3.40 at most. That’s a steal and a half, if you ask me!
