Bak kwa, or 肉干, is a Chinese sweet and salty dried meat (usually pork) that is similar to jerky. It is originally from China and is made with meat preservation and preparation techniques that have stayed unchanged throughout the centuries. And it’s really popular during Chinese New Year!

Bak kwa has always been my favourite snack during Chinese New Year. Actually, even if it isn’t Chinese New Year, I’d still love to snack on these delectable barbecued slices.

If you’ve got Muslim friends, consider this halal option—made from chicken—from IKEA Malaysia when you invite them over, and they can enjoy this barbecued goodness with you. Or if you’re Muslim, this is the perfect time to try out what your Chinese friends have been raving about at the start of every year.

Want to try this one-of-a-kind bak kwa? It’s not too late to make a trip across the borders prior to Chinese New Year and grab a box (or two) of smoky delight.
