For Singaporeans, there is always a reason to eat. Food brings all of us together, and InterContinental Singapore is giving you one more reason to gather in the name of a meal.
Starting from 1 August – 31 October 2019, The Lobby Lounge has launched their Origins Afternoon Tea, from 2pm – 5pm. The menu is curated by Executive Chef Ben Goh, who was recently named Pastry Chef Of The Year 2019 at the World Gourmet Summit.
The Origins Afternoon Tea features some of the winning creations that have won him numerous accolades from global culinary competitions. These include pieces that go back to his roots of family recipes and childhood favourites.
The session costs S$78++ for two, inclusive of fine loose-leaf tea or coffee and unlimited ice cream, or S$108++ for two, inclusive of two flutes of Taittinger Brut Champagne, fine loose-leaf tea or coffee and unlimited ice cream.
Take his Kueh Lapis, for example. It’s a recipe that he learnt from his grandmother and is a boozy rendition of this traditional kueh. The texture was firmer than I’d expected, and there wasn’t that distinct aroma that I would typically associate kueh lapis with.
Nonetheless, it was a version that went very well with the Earl Grey tea that I’d ordered. Also, the Apple Ginger Chocolate Praline was a spicy treat that went down smoothly, all thanks to the rich, decadent dark chocolate.
My top pick would have to be the Buttercream Cake, an ode to his fond memories of eating spongey, delicate and buttery cakes since he was a little boy. He elaborated that despite all the cakes he’s ever made in his line of work, he would always return to his absolute favourite.
I agree with his choice completely, as the airy sponge layers were moist and airy, while the buttercream was silky and undeniably nostalgic.
No afternoon tea is complete without scones and here you will be served two types — Cranberry Lemon and plain English scones. What made these scones stand out wasn’t only their fluffy texture, but the Fig Jam that they came with.
A deviation from the regular Strawberry Jam (which you’ll also receive), the Fig Jam had a sweetness akin to honey. I actually preferred this over the Strawberry Jam.
The afternoon tea set also gives you access to bottomless servings of ice cream, all of which are homemade. If you’ve got a penchant for sour food, the Yoghurt Yuzu Ice Cream is right up your alley as it’s a punchy number that you won’t forget.
It’s been a while since I’ve had the luxury of time to have a fancy afternoon tea on a weekend, and The Lobby Lounge was a great place to unwind on a Sunday afternoon.
As a special treat, the Origins Afternoon Tea does a fine job of presenting familiar flavours in modern interpretations, and soon enough, you’ll feel rightly spoilt — just the way you should be.
