We are all well aware of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. Yes, it has brought about a lot of negativity and anxiety, but at the same time, through this situation, we are also witnessing a handful of heartwarming stories that are slowly restoring our faith in humanity.

Ever since the start of this challenging situation, #SGUnited has been a trending movement bringing Singaporeans together to overcome this outbreak as one country. At a national level, we saw The Courage Fund receiving more than S$5.9 million in donations from Singaporeans to support families affected by the pandemic. And closer to us at the heartlands, small businesses are also doing their best not only to sustain but by going a step further to help those in need.

One such example is Jun Yuan House of Fish. This hawker stall has engaged the help of one of their regulars—Ah Guai, who unfortunately lost his job amidst the COVID-19 situation, to deliver food within 1km of their location at Old Airport Road.

Despite the government’s announcement on the increased unemployment benefits and job creations, considering Ah Guai’s age and lack of skill set, finding employment might still be a difficult task. Since Ah Guai is physically able and has a bicycle, Jun Yuan House of Fish decided to engage his help to make nearby deliveries.

Through this gesture, although an additional fee of S$1 will be charged to your meal, the hawker has made it clear that the extra cost will go entirely to Ah Guai as means for him to support his family. Thus, just by ordering a bowl of fish soup, we can do our part in helping a fellow Singaporean!

As the saying goes, ‘A little goes a long way’. This might seem like a small and insignificant gesture, but it is exactly what we would like to witness more of, especially in this period of difficulty.

To my fellow Singaporeans, let us stay strong and do as much as we can to help each other fight through COVID-19 together. I’m sure at the end of this situation, we will come out better and tougher as one united nation, #SGUnited.
