Discovering Kam Fatt Restaurant in Bukit Bintang, where most dishes are priced below RM11, made me realise what I had been missing in KL. A small bowl of curry laksa for RM6.50 in the heart of the city? Unbelievable! This place is amazing! Wish I’d known about it sooner, so I could have spent more time around here.

Kam Fatt Restaurant - Store front

Although it’s a spot I just discovered, this restaurant has been around for more than 30 years. It’s easily accessible, just a 5-minute walk from Bukit Bintang MRT Exit A. I particularly love the store front— nestled in an old building on a bustling street, it exuded a strong heritage vibe.

Kam Fatt Restaurant - Indoor and outdoor seats

There were both indoor and semi-outdoor seating options. The weather was unbearably hot, so you know which one I chose. The place wasn’t too big, with closely-spaced seats. Even so, it didn’t dampen my excitement to try the food, given the many endorsements I had seen online.

What I tried at Kam Fatt Restaurant

Kam Fatt Restaurant - Curry mee

I didn’t spend much time pondering over the menu as I had already looked through it multiple times prior to  my visit. Without hesitation, I ordered a bowl of Curry Laksa in mini size, so that I could sample more dishes and it only cost me RM6.50!

Kam Fatt Restaurant - Noodles and cockles

Though mini in size, the ingredients were genuine: 2 pieces of taupok, cockles, long beans, taugeh, and some shredded chicken. The noodles were immersed in a glossy orange broth, which looked incredibly appetising.

Kam Fatt Restaurant - Soup

The soup had a thick texture and its aromatic scent filled the air when it arrived at the table. The richness of coconut milk and the heat from spices achieved a harmonious blend, giving it a robust flavour.

Kam Fatt Restaurant - Fried intestine porridge

Next, I had a bowl of Fried Intestine Mini Porridge (RM6.50). Though I’m not a fan of this dish, I still decided to sample it as it came highly endorsed by patrons of the restaurant. The velvety porridge was topped with several pieces of fried intestines and drizzled with soy sauce.

Kam Fatt Restaurant - Porridge

This was another delightful dish I enjoyed. The porridge was cooked until soft and mushy— while a bit bland on its own, the saltiness from the fried intestines and soy sauce seamlessly added a touch of flavour to it. Hence, it struck a perfect balance.

Kam Fatt Restaurant - Fried intestinesSurprisingly, I finished the entire bowl in less than 10 minutes. A first for me! As someone who doesn’t typically fancy porridge, you can imagine how good it was.

Kam Fatt Restaurant - Kaya butter toast

Of course, I wasn’t going to skip the essential breakfast item— Kaya Butter Toast (RM3.20). There was a thin slice of butter sandwiched in between the well-toasted bread, spread with kaya

Personally, I found the kaya to be too sweet, but the toast itself stood out; it was impeccably browned and nicely toasted. The fragrance lingered in my mouth after each bite (which I always love).

Kam Fatt Restaurant - Hainan tea

To wash down my meal, I had a cup of Hainan Tea (RM3.60). The drink had a prominent layer of coffee and tea, with velvety foam on top. It achieved a good balance in flavours, with a nuanced aroma of tea shining through in the aftertaste.

Final thoughts

Kam Fatt Restaurant - All dishes

Honestly, this meal turned out to be surprisingly delightful and enjoyable. Prices this good in Bukit Bintang are a rare find but Kam Fatt Restaurant nailed it. Despite its affordability, there was no compromise on the quality and taste of the food. The mini size was a thoughtful inclusion to the menu and perfect for a light meal (or generally for a small eater, like me).

That said, I would definitely revisit if I ever crave curry laksa or porridge. If there’s one thing to criticise, it would be that the restaurant’s opening hours could be longer. I can’t wait to bring my friends and family there!
