In an Instagram post on 1 June 2022, KARA Cafe announced their departure with a closing message from its founder, Lee Li Ping.

Li Ping named the industry’s increasing manpower challenges as to why this well-loved haunt for Bukit Timah residents will be closing.

“I will especially miss seeing children’s faces light up when they swirl their froyo and choose their toppings at the Sogurt self-serve bar.” Li Ping said.

Before KARA Cafe & Dessert Bar was conceived, the Bukit Timah shophouse was home to Sogurt in March 2010. Sogurt was Singapore’s first fully self-service froyo store.

The Sogurt empire had expanded to 15 brick-and-mortar stores during the height of the yoghurt craze. By 2017, it decided to scale down and focus on one flagship concept: KARA Cafe & Dessert Bar by Sogurt.

Despite the impending closure of the physical cafe, Li Ping shared that Sogurt will still be available online, in supermarkets and for corporate orders.

KARA Cafe & Dessert Bar was well known for its tater tots and grilled toasties. They also had a second level for private events.

According to Li Ping, she has found new opportunities for all of their staff, and the new operators to whom she will handover the business are friends of theirs.

There will be further details on KARA’s closing promotions on their Instagram, so do check it out before it’s too late.

Goodbye KARA Cafe & Dessert Bar, thank you for your service (and delicious tater tots).
