There are just some things that shouldn’t exist, or if they do, they seek to make us ponder, quite loudly in fact, why? Given that we have seen some pretty wacky creations, and to add to the list, here is this Kraft Macaroni & Cheese ice cream (12USD ~ S$16.32). It’s unbelievable, but given the slew of unexpected combinations, I guess nothing surprises me anymore.
Kraft’s Macaroni & Cheese is pretty iconic, that signature blue box and thin elbow pasta pieces covered with an almost unnaturally orange cheese sauce. But, as an ice cream flavour? Now, that’s a first. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had cheese flavoured ice cream before, but they are usually mild, and only a hint of that funkiness comes through in each spoonful.
This pint of ice cream is a collaboration between Van Leeuwen and Kraft. Van Leeuwen is a hip, Brooklyn-based ice cream company that is no stranger to unique flavours such as Earl Grey Tea and Royal Wedding Cake. They launched the flavour on 14 July 2021, just in time for National Mac and Cheese Day.
The great thing about Van Leeuwen is that they specialise in French ice cream, which means they use eggs to make their ice cream. So, you have a thicker consistency and richer consistency. Okay, so we definitely cannot get out hands on this ice cream right now, but we can dream. After all, you’ve got to love that this pint is decked out in the same Kraft blue that we have come to know and love in the supermart.
The verdict that we have found remains divided. Some people love the creaminess and the cheesiness that ice cream provides, and there is that salty-sweet burst of flavour that is unexpected for ice cream. But, others simply baulk at the flavour and can’t really swallow the mouthful.
Well, if you do manage to get your hands on it or know someone who has, let us know. In the meantime, we shall be sticking to our good ole vanilla, thank yew very much.
