Joining the ranks of Takeshi-san and Tanoke, Kushiboy is the newest local Japanese eatery to hit our streets. This one’s a recipe for all things fun and communal because, at Kushiboy, drinks and affordable sharing plates come first on the agenda.
First up on their selection of bar bites, the Asari Clams (S$10) comes decked out in bits of chopped garlic and doused in a sake-laden sauce. Seafood lovers are in for a treat with this bowl of goodness, and I’d reckon it’ll pair well with some of Kushiboy’s unique beer options like the Tokyo Black Porter (S$12.50/ bottle) and Yona Yona Ale (S$12.50/ bottle).
Order this as a side to share between friends and family, and you’ll have a great time eating and drinking the night away. If that’s not your speed, then the Spam Fries (S$9) might tickle your fancy with a heap of thick-cut luncheon fries that makes everyday feel like a cheat day.
Moving on to Kushiboy’s donburi offerings, there’s the Pork Katsu Don (S$9.90 for mini, S$13.90 for full) that features a deep-fried breaded pork cutlet and a wobbly onsen egg nestled over a bed of rice. It’s comfort food that warms the soul and fills the tummy. Just don’t indulge in one while counting calories. It’s not about to make you like it any better.
Elsewhere, there’s also the Chicken Yaki Don (S$8.90 for mini, S$12.90 for full), which comprises teriyaki-glazed skewers of tender chicken meat, a bed of Japanese rice, and a side of onsen egg. Here, the question isn’t about whether the chicken or the egg came first, but rather which one you’ll want to devour first.
With such an affordable selection of rice bowls and side dishes, Kushiboy is shaping out to be a neat little slice of Japan in the streets of Jalan Besar. Come here to hang out and munch on pocket-friendly fare, or make a trip down if you’re missing Tokyo and looking to sip on some of their drink varieties.
