What better way to unwind and relax than with food? At newly-minted Tanoke, intimate, worry-free dining sits first on the agenda. This swanky establishment resides along Purvis Street and serves up some seriously indulgent fare. There’s a flurry of charcoal-grilled binchotan options, and an impressive selection of Japanese sake to boot.

Housed on the upper floor of a shophouse, Tanoke’s furnishings remain classy and elegant. It’s not all about aesthetics, either. Lavish appetisers and small plates make the options here some to be heavily enamoured by.

The Hamachi Carpaccio (S$32) is one such option. Here, you get sliced yellowtail that arrives delicately seasoned with a light, heady truffle shoyu and topped off with fresh, bursting ikura. The folks at Tanoke can stop there, but why should they? Additional shavings of black truffle make an appearance here to send this plate over the top.

Moving away from the appetisers, the Tanoke Premium (S$68/S$128) is a rice bowl to rule all rice bowls. Teriyaki foie gras, uni (sea urchin), ikura, and a wobbly onsen egg sit atop warm niigata rice. The centrepiece? Grilled slices of top-grade beef. Choose between the Australian MB7 Striploin and the A5 Togichi Ribeye. Go for the latter if you’re feeling fancy, or if it’s payday and some self-love is due.

Yet another product of Tanoke’s binchotan grill is the Lamb Coastal Rack (S$38). This one is a splendid display of koji aged New Zealand coastal baby lamb racks, topped off with a sweet onion marinade and a luscious karashi mayo. Sounds rich? I think so too. After all, nothing comes light on the palate here.
I reckon these options would pair wonderfully with Tanoke’s sake offerings, making it all a thoroughly sinful affair that would leave diners utterly spoilt. For nearby eats, do also check out Wagyu More in Bugis Junction for more bountiful servings of Japanese beef.
