As mentioned in their media release on 21 November 2020, SFA stated that the allergen was first discovered by the Centre of Food Safety (CFS) of Hong Kong’s Food and Environmental Hygiene Department in a sample of Kwong Cheong Thye Sambal Belachan Chilli Paste.

Food products containing such ingredients that are known to cause hypersensitivity must be declared on the food packaging labels to safeguard public health. This allergen, however, was not declared on the specific product label.

Further investigation by Kwong Cheong Thye later revealed that four other of its products could potentially contain the same fish allergen due to the shrimp-based ingredients used. As such, the manufacturer is in the process of recalling all 5 of its affected products with the following specified ‘Best before’ dates.

In its latest Facebook post, Kwong Cheong Thye has reassured customers that the presence of this fish allergen does not pose a food safety issue to general consumers, except for those who are allergic to fish.

However, should any affected consumer feel uncomfortable and would like to proceed with a 1-for-1 exchange or refund, all they need to do is to contact the food manufacturer at +65 6748 7766 or DM them on their Facebook page to facilitate the process.

Kwong Cheong Thye is currently in the midst of re-labelling their product, so do make sure to check the labels carefully before making any purchases!

Date & Time: 1-for-1 exchange or refund of affected products are now available
