If you grew up in Subang Jaya, there’s no doubt your heart would skip multiple beats upon hearing this name, Lim Fried Chicken. This fried chicken joint is practically an institution, having served their delicious, crispy fried chicken to Malaysians since 1983.

Lim Fried Chicken - storefront

For those unfamiliar with the origin story, Lim Fried Chicken began in a little hawker stall in SS14’s Wong Soon Kee coffee shop. Word spread of a fried chicken that was delicious and long queues quickly formed. Now, you just need to walk into one of their 13 outlets scattered around Klang Valley.

Since I live and breathe fried chicken, I decided to find out for myself whether this deep fried fowl is friend or foe.

What I tried at Lim Fried Chicken

Lim Fried Chicken - rice and chicken

Of course I went straight for their best seller: a generous plate of rice, the much adored LFC drumstick and vegetables (RM15.90) And what came out from the kitchen did not disappoint. Firstly, I was fascinated (albeit a little intimidated) by the size of the chicken. No shortage of chickens here, that’s for sure! The dish comes with stir fried cabbage, the rice drenched in curry, and a healthy dollop of sambal at the side. If cabbage doesn’t do you justice, you can always opt for the long beans.

I pierced my fork into the freshly fried chicken and to my delight, the crisp sound of skin crackling revealing the tender white meat. I felt my arteries groan in excitement as they prepared to invite the distinguished juicy guest. Upon taking my first bite of the fried chicken, I immediately understood the love poured towards this fowl. Coated in a thin batter, the golden crispy skin is divine and addictive. Despite being fried in a deep vat of oil, there are absolutely zero traces of grease.

I added a little spoonful of the sambal, secretly hoping for it to give me that spicy kick, basically to give the dish the final punch it needed. And unfortunately, that’s where I felt a kick to the gut. The sambal was sweet. Never a fan of sweet sambal, I cast the red sauce aside and focused on the highlights of the dish: the chicken. Light eaters beware— to tackle Lim’s Fried Chicken might be an arduous battle.

Lim Fried Chicken - Chee Cheong Fun

Next, I tried the local favourite: a plate of Chee Cheong Fun with signature Fried Chicken (RM16.80). And yes, it’s everything that was in the previous plate of rice but on chee cheong fun. That meant the sweet sambal and curry heavily doused on the silky white noodles. To be honest, I was rather apprehensive about this combination at first. I could only imagine my traditionalist friends screaming “blasphemy” at such a flavour combo.

It was delicious but at the same time, I still couldn’t stomach the sweet sambal. And as usual, the fried chicken reigned supreme. I understood why they sold their fried chicken by the bucket now. Yes, you can actually get four pieces of their fried chicken to share amongst friends and family (or by yourself if you’re feeling extremely ravenous).

Final thoughts

Lim Fried Chicken - fried chicken

If you’re looking for simple comfort food, Lim Fried Chicken is your best bet. And if you are just like me who believes sambal has to be spicy, you can always inform them to opt the sambal out entirely. You might also be in for a good post-fried chicken snooze after such a heavy meal. For such large portions, it’s definitely worth every ringgit forked out.

You can also pair the fried chicken with nasi lemak. If you’re not in the mood for fried chicken, there are plenty of other protein options available. Such as chicken curry, squid sambal, mutton curry and fried fish. Their mutton is also a favourite amongst the locals as it’s very tender and delicious. But no matter what, the fried chicken reigns supreme.

Lim Fried Chicken, you’ve set my arteries and heart on fire that’s for sure. I’ll definitely be returning for more of that juicy chicken.
