Opening a restaurant is a feat in itself but opening eight is something even the most successful chefs can only dream of. The accomplishment is especially meaningful for Maruhachi Donburi & Curry as ‘hachi’ means 8 in Japanese.

To celebrate the momentous milestone— which is also their debut in the East (Bedok North)— they launched a limited-edition
Cheese Menchi Katsu Curry (S$10.80) and Cheese Menchi Katsu Set (S$12.80). It was available exclusively at the new Bedok branch till 14 May 2022 but will also be available at their 7 other branches but only until 30 June 2022.

Why cheese? Chef-owner August Wijaya explains that it was a decision inspired by his wife’s love for cheese. The couple noticed that it was a popular obsession in Singapore and decided to give the public what it craves.

cheesy pork and rice

Of course, I had to pop by to have a go at these tempting dishes. I’ve got to say, the star dish for me was the Cheese Menchi Katsu Curry. It is handmade with thick, high-quality pork cuts, and this meat is delivered fresh from the US before being deep fried in panko. The cheese is ingeniously placed between the meat and the panko, which infuses every bite with a delicious burst of creaminess. It also keeps the cheese warm and gooey throughout— that’s perfect for slow eaters like me!

Every Cheese Menchi Katsu Set comes with fragrant Japanese rice and a hearty bowl of Miso Soup. My recommendation for anyone crazy for Japanese curry is to go straight for the Cheese Menchi Katsu Curry.

Apart from this pair of fantastic new dishes, Maruhachi’s signature dishes are also coming to the Bedok branch. Among them are
Signature Pork Katsu Don (S$9.80), a classic bowl elevated by Chef’s August “Original Sauce” recipe, Pork Katsu Curry Don (S$12.80) laden with juicy, tender Katsu coated in Chef’s August curry recipe, and Signature Pork Katsu Set (S$11.80), a complete meal served with Japanese rice and miso soup.
