Nestled in a quiet spot in the middle of Ngee Ann City’s 5th floor is Mizuki, a Japanese restaurant that has been known among its regulars for its smart concept: 2 counters— 1 for sushi and the other for tempura. Now for the first time since its opening in 2017, Mizuki has launched a combined sushi and tempura course menu, regardless of where you sit.

This got us excited and we headed down for a taste of this exquisite menu.

At Mizuki, your dishes will be crafted by a sushi master from Osaka and veteran tempura master as they ply their craft with the freshest seafood catches from Japan.

Mizuki - chef

Customers can select between 3 different Japanese dining experiences available at different price points, S$198, S$268 or S$388. Each dinner begins with appetiser-style dishes, sashimi, cooked seasonal dish, a series of individual tempura pieces, nigiri sushi, before ending with a kakiage soba or don and finally, dessert.

Restaurant - sashimi

We tried the S$268 menu, and fell in love not only with the taste, but also the visual splendour of the dishes. The sashimi course consisted of beautifully-plated evergreen favourites like bluefin ootoro, and rarer seasonal fish such as Kuromutsu (Japanese bluefish) and Ainame (fat greenling).

Mizuki - tempura

Next was the highly-awaited tempura course. We were served 5 pieces of tempura, each fried freshly on cue. The highlight of the course was the seaweed tempura which was topped with a glorious serving of fresh and creamy Hokkaido bafun uni and caviar and Kuruma ebi (Japanese tiger prawn) served in 2 parts: crispy fried prawns legs alongside its sweet and juicy body.

Mizuki - crab

We were greeted with a winter-time delicacy for the 4th course, Seiko kani, a steamed and deshelled Hokkaido female snow crab with roe. This was absolutely delicious! My dining partner and I wanted more.

Restaurant - nigiri

The nigiri course consisted of 4 types of sushi including toro (bluefin tuna), nodoguro (sea perch), shiromi (sea bream) and uni (sea urchin).

For the next course, we were given the option between Kakiage Don and Kakiage Soba. You can also upgrade to a Mini Negitoro Uni Don for a supplement of S$40. For dessert, diners can look forward to a selection of fresh fruits from Japan.
