Mye Mye Pan Mee: Uncle Roger’s favourite RM16 pan mee hits all the right herbal notes

He dons a bright orange polo tee and is known worldwide for roasting BBC Food host Hersha Patel’s questionable egg fried rice video. He’s none other than beloved Malaysian stand-up comedian, Uncle Roger.

So when Uncle Roger posted on his Instagram stories about his last meal in Malaysia before flying off to London, everyone was curious— just where was this stall and what was the dish? The stand-up comic gladly obliged by providing the stall’s location, Mye Mye Pan Mee and the type of pan mee to order as well.

Well, if I was about to travel for an hour for a bowl of pan mee, it definitely would be one recommended by Uncle Roger. Hoping for a bowl that would blow my socks off,  I set my Waze to Kajang’s Mye Mye Pan Mee and took off.

What I tried at Mye Mye Pan Mee

I opted for two things on the menu: Uncle Roger’s go-to meal, the Herbal Parsley Soup Pan Mee (RM16.80) and since I can never resist the allure of dumplings, the Fried Prawn Dumplings (RM9.40)

Within 10 minutes, a huge bowl topped with a generous amount of parsley sat on the table. I could smell the strong herbal scent emanating from the bowl. There were also bits of fried anchovies, chunks of minced pork meat and julienned wood ear fungus. There were also goji berries in it (yay for antioxidants!). The dish came with a side of chilli belacan for those who want a little kick in their broth. A little heads up—  if you find parsley utterly despicable, it’s highly recommended you avoid this dish.

Undaunted by the portion of parsley, I mixed all the ingredients together and took a quick sip of the herbal broth. The herbal taste was rather potent, I could definitely see myself slurping this down on a rainy day instead during Malaysia’s infamous sweltering heat. I’m sure it would also fare well for those who are down with a cold. I particularly enjoyed the noodles— it had this bouncy, springy bite to it. Paired with the juicy wood ear fungus and the saltiness of the fried anchovies, it turned out to be a rather delicious pan mee. The portions were definitely generous too.

Just as I was wolfing down the noodles, the Fried Prawn Dumplings arrived. I squealed with delight and immediately took a bite (and burnt my tongue in the process). It was just delicious! Crispy on the outside and it was packed to the brim with minced prawn meat, carrots and if I’m not mistaken, more of the wood ear fungus. It was so tasty that I gobbled the two pieces. I easily could have eaten four of those crispy babies.

Final thoughts

As I finished my last few bites of Herbal Parsley Soup Pan Mee and was sweating profusely, I admitted that as much as I truly enjoyed this herbal broth– this was definitely something I could not eat on a hot day. But then again, there were many customers who were slurping down the bowl with ease— so it’s up to you, really. The dumplings were lip smackingly delicious and I would definitely recommend you to try it out.

For those of you who can’t take parsley, fret not. Mye Mye Pan mee serves an array of other noodle-based dishes such as the Traditional Pan Mee, Chilli Pan Mee, Fried Mee Pan Mee, Pork Noodles and Kolo Mee

But would I trade my beloved spicy chilli pan mee for this bowl of herbs? I would say thank you but I’ll stick to my chilli pan mee. Thank you Uncle Roger for introducing me to a new world of pan mee. And this is definitely the most parsley I’ve had in my entire life.
