Good food often draws a long queue, and while I’m not usually willing to join snaking queues, this well-loved hawker stall just might change my mind. Old Teochew, a humble stall selling yummy bowls of mee siam and satay bee hoon, recently opened a second outlet at Block 829 Tampines Street 81 on 15 Dec 2022— another point for the East siders!
Originally located at 20 Ghim Moh Road Market & Food Centre serving satay bee hoon and mee diam, the stall has been run by the 2012 Golden Age Talentime winner and his wife for the past 6 years. However, don’t expect him to croon at every order, as Old Teochew is known for their long queues with the average order taking roughly 10 to 15 mins to prepare.
The latest outlet will retain the original menu of Mee Siam (S$3.80) and Satay Bee Hoon (S$5.50/S$7.50). When our colleague, Aaron, visited their original outlet, he tried the Mee Siam which came with a boiled egg cut into 2, tau pok, tau geh, ku chye, a dollop of sambal chilli, fried tiny dried shrimps and bee hoon doused in a thick reddish gravy.
The bee hoon had the perfect bite and the tau geh and tau pok made each mouthful more interesting with their varying textures. The fried tiny dried shrimp will hit you like mini smoky umami-flavoured bombs. Accompanying all of those ingredients is the sauce that had the right balance of sweet and sour notes.
We didn’t get to try the Satay Bee Hoon as they didn’t sell those on Thursday, but luckily, the new outlet will serve them every day (or until they’ve run out). It is said that Satay Bee Hoon sauce takes on a more curry-oriented flavour, with a nutty and peppery taste.
Hopefully, with two outlets, the queues are shorter this time around.
